We take a breather this week as there are only 2 principal council by-elections held across England and Scotland. Both seats are held by their respective parties: Lib Dems the seat in Devon and Cornwall and the SNP in Scotland. In the Lib Dem defence, Cllr Fabian King stood out from the four candidates as the clear first choice for residents in Exe Valley, East Devon DC. The seat in was last contested in by only us and the Tories in the 2023 locals, but when compared to 2021, similarly a 4-way race, our vote share actually grew by over ...

The Joy of Six 1336

"The government is trying to solve the wrong problem. They are focusing on those who are out of work, when it is increasingly clear that one big reason people with disabilities are not in employment is because work environments have fewer roles they can fill."Ruth Patrick and Aaron Reeves argue that cuts and caps to benefits have always harmed people, not helped them into work. Fred Garratt-Stanley, writing for The Lead, finds malaise, discontent and the rise of Reform UK at the English seaside. "When you take away someone's belief in the place they live in, you lay the groundwork ...

[IMG: In this blog I enthusiastically support Diversity, Inclusion and equality programmes] Across the Straits of Greenland, formerly called the Atlantic, the Trumpistas have declared war on DEI policies. There is no rationale for doing this other than that angry white men are fearful of entrenched white males not having an inbuilt advantage in employment or any other aspect of life. Giving equality of opportunity to all regardless of gender, faith of colour will threaten their privilege and sense of entitlement. I am one such man myself. I have sailed through life because I am white and male. Those are ...

As a dedicated Liberal I've always vaguely subscribed to the Whig view of history, defined roughly that, by and large, on the whole and in the main, things are gradually getting better. Improvements are due to the gradual progress made in the development of democracy, increases in individual liberty, and advances in science and technology. There are, of course, occasional steps backwards, but the direction is generally onwards and upwards. To take each in turn, since 1945 in the UK we've seen the increase in women's and minority representation in parliament, and the creation of effective specialist committees; we no ...

A philosophy of cynicism and cruelty As a country, we have a very long and complex history when it comes to how we treat our most vulnerable. In recent years, it is abundantly clear that our country has failed to treat these people with dignity. From the Elizabethan Poor Laws to the introduction of austerity, we have a pattern of taking one step forward, followed by two steps back — and this Labour government is no exception to the rule. We have a government that solely values its citizens based on how much income tax they pay, disregarding the many ...

The Independent reports that Keir Starmer is in a race against time to secure a deal with Donald Trump's White House to escape tariffs on steel and aluminium, and dodge further reciprocal tariffs which could come into play at the start of next month. The paper says that the PM's diplomacy comes after the White House imposed 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminium imports on Wednesday, signalling that last-ditch efforts to persuade Trump to spare British industry from his global tariffs have failed: While the European Union responded by announcing trade counter-measures and hitting American goods with retaliatory ...
