There's a great exhibition on at the Leicester Adult Education Centre in Wellington Street at the moment. The Art School Dance Goes on Forever looks at the achievements of alumni of Leicester Art School in the 1960s. Those alumni include Tony Kaye, a founding member of Yes; the members of the band Family; and the actor Charles Dance. Many more made their names in fields related to art. The exhibition closes on 17 March. It's open Monday - Thursday, 8.30am - 8.30pm, Friday 8.30am - 4.30pm and closed on Saturday and Sunday. I had intended to include a video about ...
Josh Self has some good news - Reform UK's civil war will be a protracted farce: "[Rupert] Lowe's substantial online presence will ensure every aspect of this row is played out in public. That means recurrent poor headlines for Reform - as an array of significant political milestones await." "As of 1900, about 18 per cent, or nearly one in five, American children died before their fifth birthday. The most common causes were infectious diseases - pneumonia, diphtheria, dysentery, measles, and other illnesses ran rampant through households, and children were especially at risk."Anna North reminds us of what life was ...
As a Polish born Councillor, I have always wanted to show my beautiful nation to some of my Council colleagues. Although Poland has become a popular tourist or a city-break destination, I think that still many of us have incorrect perceptions of the country of my birth. Since 1989 and the collapse of the Berlin Wall, and in particular since the beginning of the centre, Poland has changed beyond recognition. Membership of the EU since 2004, high levels of growth, investment and productivity, and a strong economy helped Poland to establish itself as a key decision maker in Europe, and ...
Why Labour's council reorganisation threatens young people's representation in politics
Local government reorganisation is happening. That's the reality. As a current district councillor, I could debate the pros and (many) cons of this all day – but one topic I've heard worryingly little about is how these reforms could destroy what little representation young people have in local government. Currently, young people in local government are a rarity. According to 2022 data from the Local Government Association, just 16% of councillors are under the age of 45 – despite the same group accounting for over 40% of the population. The same dataset found that just 1.2% of councillors were aged ...
You'll be familiar, no doubt, with the notion of business continuity planning. Taking steps to make sure that, in the event that something goes wrong, an organisation retains the ability to function. This might be something as simple as equipment failure or a temporary power cut. Or it could be something more substantial, like a hurricane, a wildfire-enforced evacuation or a global pandemic. Business continuity planning isn't just for big multinational corporations. It's something that everyone should be thinking about. Even solo consultants. In fact, especially solo consultants. Because if things go pear-shaped, it's going to be up to us ...
In the last couple of weeks, policy on defence has suddenly moved centre-stage - to the point where even Lib Dem Voice has an article about it! The support given to Ukraine by our parliamentary party is no less than one would expect, but perhaps we should look a little deeper, as there's an idea for making defence spending more effective which the Liberal Democrats are ideally placed to champion. Much political and media attention is focused on the need to spend more on defence as a percentage of GDP. Starmer realised the significance of this and the need to ...
Ed Davey urges Starmer to visit Canada to show support for Mark Carney in his stand against Trump
From the Guardian live politics blog this morning: Last night Mark Carney, the formconer governor of the Bank of England, was elected leader of the Liberal party in Canada, which means he will become prime minister. Canadian election results don't often take centre stage in UK politics, but Carney was elected promising fierce opposition to President Trump's talk of annexing Canada and in London Ed Davey, the Lib Dem leader, is urging Starmer to fly to Ottawa this week "to stand in solidarity with the country's new prime minister in response to Trump's threats against Canada". In a statement Davey ...
The Observer reports that the split within Reform that led to one of their five MPs losing the party whip, has escalated. The paper says that Donald Trump's behaviour towards Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dented the appeal of being seen as pro-Trump, and in the past two days, civil war has broken out among Farage's small group of MPs: First, Rupert Lowe used an interview with the Daily Mail to accuse his leader of being "messianic", before the party responded by revealing that Lowe had been reported to the police for making physical threats against Reform's chairman. This weekend, ...
