As there are no council by-elections this week, here is a re-run of my piece about why we need more Liberal Democrat candidates in council elections, both each May and in by-elections: The merits of standing in a council by-election we have a chance of winning are obvious. So too for wards which we might hope to win in the future and where the by-election is a chance to accelerate that progress. But there are also huge benefits in standing even in wards that we are not likely to win for a very long time yet (if ever). One set ...

Made in 1977 but feeling somehow older, this pleasant little film takes us round various Fenland locations and discusses the history of the region. It's good to see Crowland Abbey included among the better-known locations.

Listening to Donald Trump's press conference about last night's tragic air collision over Washington DC and I feel physically sick. The man has disgraced the bereaved families and the office of the Presidency. — Al Pinkerton MP (@AlPinkerton) January 30, 2025 Labour has to observe the diplomatic niceties: the Conservatives are too busy sucking up to Donald Trump. So it falls to the Liberal Democrats to say what the large majority of the British population would say about him. Well done, Al Pinkerton.

I've recently been reading 'Meditations for Mortals' by Oliver Burkeman (which I highly recommend). In the book, Burkeman recounts the story of Erik Hagerman who, following Trump's 2016 victory, gave up all news and current affairs, right down to listening to white noise on headphones in his local coffee shop to avoid overhearing anything unpleasant. Apparently he was slated in the press and on social media – though if they were hoping to get him to change his ways then I think they'd rather missed the point. I had my very own Hagerman moment last week when, despite being an ...

I thought I would have a search for my great great grandmother's brother Sandy Campbell in the British Newspaper Archive, and I struck gold. He was the subject of an article in The Sphere for 13 October 1900 - the photograph above is taken from it. There's more than one post in it for me, but here is Queen Victoria calling on Sandy's mother - and my great great great grandmother - Margaret Campbell (née Gordon), 1808-91. What the report calls "Kintore" is the settlement near Crathie known as Khantore today: Sandy and the late John Brown were boys about ...

The Liberal Democrats are on the up. We are back as the third-largest party in Britain with a record number of MPs. We have gained councillors at every set of local elections since 2018. We have won, quite literally, from Land's End to John o' Groats, winning the trust, support and votes of people right across the country – but we have never won a metro mayoralty. Metro mayors have a wide range of responsibilities, from improving the local economy, to infrastructure and strategic transport. It is vital we have liberal voices at this level of government. So far, every ...

The Independent reports that Chancellor Rachel Reeves has prompted fury over the environment with the growth plan she unveiled, including backing for a third runway at Heathrow Airport and for new roads, and sweeping away environmental protections in planning. The paper says that Shaun Spiers, executive director at think tank Green Alliance, has warned against "growth at any cost", saying:"The economic case for bigger airports and new roads is highly questionable, and it's crystal clear that pushing ahead with these will fly in the face of the UK's climate targets." While David Walsh of the World Wildlife Fund said that ...
