Nestled between the craggy outcrops of the Stiperstones ridge, and the imposing plateau of the Long Mynd, is a piece of land, 50 hectares in size. It neighbours the ancient Portway, and descends gradually to meet the rolling fields of the lowlands. Meadow pipits and skylarks flutter and parachute above, whilst a shy brown hare creeps through the grasses below, ears flat along its back, all as an unmistakable 'cuckoo' call drifts by on an upland breeze. This is Betchcott Hill, a promising site, containing pockets of valuable habitat, and home to some specialist species, not least a breeding pair ...

This time last week we were all celebrating the news of a stonking by-election win in Colinton/Fairmilehead in Edinburgh. We jumped from fourth place to first to elect Louise Spence after an intense campaign which saw activists from all over the city basically give up their lives for four months. This came just after the General Election, too. We are a party that prides ourselves in campaigning all year round, but we know that it's a marathon, not a sprint. We've been sprinting now for 6 months. And it's not over yet. We'd known Louise well for years. She'd fought ...

Jeremy Clarkson believes strikers should be shot in front of their families. Or so you will believe if you've been reading Twitter this week. The example above comes from a usually interesting left-wing account. The truth is that Clarkson did say that, but for once someone really is being quoted out of context. Have a look at this video. Yes, he was making fun of the BBC's insistence on 'balance'. Maybe the moral is that you shouldn't attempt irony on The One Show. And Clarkson's politics are not always what people imagine. As I wrote here, he made the best ...

New polling from More in Common shows strong support from the public for the recent farmer protests: [IMG: More in Common polling on farmer protests November 2024] As More in Common's Luke Tryl explains: In part that seems to be motivated by the fact that people think farmers should be exempt from inheritance tax when passing their farms on to the next generation. 57% of the public. Explaining the details and thresholds does not shift opposition. On an intriguing detail he also adds: There has been much debate about whether Jeremy Clarkson's involvement was an asset or a hinderance to ...

A poll conducted by YouGov after the last general election revealed that the Liberal Democrats won 16% of the vote of those aged 18-24-year-olds. As good as this may seem (especially compared to 5% of the same age group we won in 2015), this was still 2% behind the Green Party and 25% behind Labour. Traditionally, social liberal parties tend to score well amongst younger voters and this trend has continued in all elections this year. To further solidify our status as an electoral force this is the most likely demographic with which we could make advances in 2025 and ...

The UK's image of its place in the world since the Second World War has rested on the claim to act as the 'Atlantic bridge', as Tony Blair used to put it. We were the USA's closest ally within Europe, and one of the major players, alongside France and Germany, within Europe. The end of the Cold War weakened that claim, as American attention turned towards the Pacific. Brexit weakened it a great deal further. But now Trump Republicans and their British supporters are insisting that we have to choose: follow America, or slide back towards Europe. The Times on ...

Another side of Farage

The Guardian reports that Nigel Farage's group campaigning against the World Health Organization (WHO) is staffed by consultants who work with the nicotine products industry. The paper says that Farage is the chair and a co-founder of Action on World Health, which campaigns to reform or replace the WHO, arguing that it should not be putting pressure on governments to bring in public health measures. They add that the other co-founder is David Roach, whose firm provides secretariat services to the Global Initiative on Novel Nicotine, which advocates for nicotine pouches and other products and that Roach's firm has also ...
