I've found the transcript of a radio interview this blog's hero Vaughan Wilkins gave to the BBC's North American Service in 1943. It formed part of a programme in a series called Bridgebuilders. This edition looked at the book trade in wartime and, as well as the novelist Wilkins, a bookseller and a publisher appeared. A transcript of the programme was printed in the 5 August 1943 issue of The Bookseller. Wilkins was interviewed by Nicholas Stuart. Stuart: Before you can sell your book or publish it, it's got to be written. So to give us the low-down on that ...

With the new government's expansion of the scope and size of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, there is a real opportunity to accelerate the digital transformation of public services. Bringing together officials from the Government Digital Service, the Incubator for AI, and the Central Digital Data Office under one Departmental roof ensures that it will be much better equipped to enable digital transformation in key areas, including justice, education and healthcare. The appointment of Lord Vallance as Science Minister is a real coup which testifies to the willingness of the new government to use external expertise. With this ...

We stand for the people

It's already clear again, the old divide in Britain. Labour stands for the workers. The Tories stand for the rich. Everybody already knew that. They didn't know that we stood for the people. But they felt it when they voted in their thousands to elect local Liberal Democrat councillors, and then to choose 72 Liberal Democrat MPs. Ed Davey knew it when he went round the country in 2020 just talking to people, asking what they want. Now comes another time to prove it. The cost of living. It's going up again with the energy price rise this Autumn. The ...

The Joy of Six 262

"The default assumption about a photo is about to become that it's faked, because creating realistic and believable fake photos is now trivial to do. Kate Moore argues that allotments beat food poverty, boost mental health and bring back the insects and bees. "The 1902 Metropolis Water Act set up the Metropolitan Water Board. Individually, we have almost all benefitted from the wonders of mobile phones - communicating with family and friends in ways only dreamt of before, booking tickets for trains or exhibitions at the last minute, being told how to get from A to B and booking GP appointments (which, yes, does digitally exclude some people too). But have we let our individual dependence on phones impinge on the freedoms of others too much? I am sure you know what I am driving at! When you are on the train wanting a bit of peace and a passenger is talking on their ...

The Guardian reports that Richard Hermer, the attorney general has intervened in the contentious decision over whether to ban UK arms sales to Israel as officials struggle to distinguish between "offensive" and "defensive" weapons. The paper says that Hermer has told Foreign Office officials he will not approve a decision to ban some weapons sales until they can say for sure which could be used to break international humanitarian law. They add that the legal wrangling at the top of government is understood to be the principal cause of the delay to the decision, which has become even more sensitive ...
