Alan Robertshaw thinks not, and also discusses the legal position on such prosecutions. ...

The impact of local campaigning is large enough not to be ignored, as any party which decided not to campaign seriously at the local level would soon discover. Those final words in the conclusion of David Denver and Gordon Hands' Modern Constituency Electioneering: Local Campaigning in the 1992 General Election* may seem obvious to readers of this blog. But in their time they were a controversial and path-breaking conclusion for the book was part of a revolution in British political science's understanding of local campaigning. David Denver, who has sadly just died, had already been ahead of the time nearly ...

It's the news we all hoped to hear. Dominika the missing skunk has been found and is now back home in Braybrooke. The HFM News report on the happy ending to the story that has gripped Market Harborough says: There had been numerous sightings of Dominika on the Ashley Way estate since she escaped from her owner's home in Braybrooke last week, but the animal had proved hard to catch. She was eventually found sleeping in a shed on Rookwell Drive in Little Bowden and later reunited with Jayne McLaughlin, after the homeowner initially called a veterinary surgery for advice. ...

First I told you, directly, your striking eyes are stunning And your lovely face has strong features, clear skin, full lips Your hands are mobile when you talk, your long fingers expressive Your stance is poised; were you a dancer? Or an athlete? George Peretz on how governments can rein in Elon Musk: "There is an obvious thing that government could do now and that requires no legislation and costs no money: government could simply shift all the material it currently puts out on X to another platform or platforms ... That would in turn encourage all the users of X who currently use X to monitor government activity (journalists, businesses, many ordinary citizens) to open and use accounts on those competing platforms." "Praising a recent Murray article, he said it was 'thoughtful, original, and generated more subscriptions than any other article we ...

One of the political messages which did get through in the July General Election - thanks to Ed Davey - was the vital importance, but also the chronic neglect, of carers. There are an estimated 1 in 5 of the population who care, unpaid, for sick or disabled loved ones: a vast invisible army without whom society would literally fall apart. Ed was able to use his own direct experience as a carer, and that of his upbringing, to highlight some of the problems - which are growing as the population ages and as fiscal pressures grow. Having got the ...

I caught the bus to Ludlow with every intention of taking lots of photos of the architecture, but didn't get the good weather I had imagined. Still, I did like this little industrial building near the station. [image or embed] — Jonathan Calder (@lordbonkers.bsky.social) Aug 19, 2024 at 22:20 Elon Musk's determination to ruin Twitter has led a lot of people to explore an alternative, Bluesky. I've had an account there myself for a while - you can find it here - and have been making more use of it since I got back from holiday. Not only is the ...

The scale of the atrocities in Gaza, which we are seeing daily on our TV screens, has reached levels of horror which have left most of us stunned - both by Israel's brutality, and by the audacity with which it is defying world opinion. The total Gaza death toll is over 40,000- with an estimated missing further 10,000 buried or blown to pieces. Many thousands more are expected to die from malnutrition, disease or neglect in the coming months. Sadly, each new outrage is no longer shocking, given the number of schools, hospitals, universities, churches, mosques, and water works which ...

We recently received concerns from residents that the "flashing" 30mph safety sign in Blackness Road approaching Balgay Road/Blackness Avenue is not functioning correctly - it is the one heading westwards - the one heading eastwards appears fine. We took this up with the council's Road Safety Team Leader who has advised as follows : "The signs should flash at vehicles that are travelling excess of the speed limit and I will get someone to check to make sure that they are working. The manufacturer SWARCO will also be coming back to Dundee and I will get them to check them ...
