Craven Arms, a 19-century Shropshire town named after an inn, was known for its livestock markets and its railways. You can see both in a 1952 film of a sheep sale there. It's striking how little traffic there is on the road and that there were fields so close to the town centre. Click on the still above to watch the film on the BBC Rewind site.

The Joy of Six 1256

"There is virtually no social, cultural or legal protection for Muslims. Organisations that ought to protect them - think of the refusal of the Equality and Human Rights Commission to launch an enquiry into Tory Islamophobia - wash their hands. No wonder we've seen this horrific street violence. It's surprising it's not happened before." Peter Oborne says the UK's media and politicians are almost wholly to blame for this week's riots. Sara Wilford asks why are so many of the rioters are in their forties and fifties. Hugo Daniel hears the voices of the forgotten child victims of the Post ...

After the riots

I have never not been proud of my country, but there have been historic events and current unrest that has made it difficult with my daily international contacts to promote all the wonderful things the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has to offer. My work brings me into contact with people across Europe, Asia, Australasia and North America and since Brexit, that was seen as a massive own goal by people overseas, our image and reputation has been damaged. This past week only reinforced an image of decline that the previous 9 years with 5 Prime Ministers, ...

Yesterday evening Ed Davey sent an email to members in response to the public violence over the past week. It says: The last ten days have been immensely difficult for our country. First, the horrific attack in Southport that claimed the lives of three innocent young girls. Then, the far right extremists who exploited this tragedy to incite and commit appalling acts of violence. Violence that targeted Muslims, asylum seekers and communities of colour. These thugs do not speak for Britain or our values. But how we respond does. My response to last night's events: It is heartwarming to see ...

Apologies for not covering Bobby Dean's maiden speech earlier. He gave it during the debate on the Budget Responsibility Bill on 30th July. Here is the full text: I congratulate the hon. Member for East Renfrewshire (Blair McDougall) on that heartfelt speech. It was gracious of him to say that his was not the most beautiful of constituencies, but I think he is at least in the top 600 and possibly even higher after one or two whiskies. I also congratulate the hon. Member for Glasgow North (Martin Rhodes) on his maiden speech. The points he made about engaging with ...

Residents will recall that, back in June, we highlighted a missing seat and one that was badly deteriorated in Annfield Street. We reported this to the City Council and our local environment manager promised action. This has since happened including a new seat at the east end of the street - see 'before' and 'after' photos.

Nation Cymru report that the Welsh Conservative leader has been accused of engaging in "Islamophobic race baiting" and "dog-whistle racism" by the Muslim Council of Wales. They say that pressure has been mounting for Andrew RT Davies in recent days over his controversial social media posts about Halal meat in Welsh schools: Last week, he accused a school in the Vale of Glamorgan of serving Halal only lunches to pupils. Before the school had a chance to respond, Mr Davies published the "incorrect" claims online. The post went viral racking up millions of views after it was shared by the ...
