Seeing as I am writing this in the county, it's high time we has some more Shropshire abandoned lead mine porn. I photographed these remains myself back in 2010.

Market Harborough's street theatre festival is back. Arts Fresco Lite will be held in the town centre on Saturday 7 September. Neil Kitson, chair of the festival's organising committee, explains: "Like many festivals, we are limited in the financial support available and after being unsuccessful with a bid for new funding, we have taken the decision to return this year with a slimmed-down version of the festival, highlighting a few of our most popular performers. We hope that people will come out and support us again as we try to sustain the legacy of this amazing community event." Full details ...

Good news from Harborough District Council, which has been run by a Liberal Democrat, Green and Labour coalition since last May: Harborough District Council's Cabinet, approved, on 15 July, the criteria, allocation and the process for awarding £1 million of capital grant funding to parish and town councils to support them in delivering community projects. ... This grant scheme will strengthen working relationships between the council and its parishes and towns and enable delivery of projects and initiatives at a local level. My old friend Phil Knowles, the Lib Dem leader of the council, said after the scheme was approved: ...

Liberal Democrat former councillor Andrew De Freitas has died: he was truly a unique and special man who deserves a prominent place in our history. As his friends we have jointly written this tribute. Based on outdated inaccurate perceptions, very few people expected that Grimsby and Cleethorpes would be bright blobs of gold on the UK map of local government control. Few people ever thought that the Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council might be a Liberal Democrat, that he would be of Caribbean descent, and that his tenure as Leader would see great achievements for the Borough. It gets ...

This Saturday, 10th August, should have been a day of celebration of diversity in Gateshead. Organisers of the event - Out North East - however have decided to postpone the event, planned for Gateshead town centre, because of concerns about the recent riots carried out by far right extremists. While it is worrying that a tiny minority of extremists threatening violence can impact on the wider

Lib Dem Equalities Spokesperson Christine Jardine has written to Women and Equalities Minister Anneliese Dodds to welcome the work the Government has done so far in measures to support Muslim communities and urging them to go further by filling the post of Independent Advisor on Islamophobia that the Conservatives left vacant for two years. The text of her letter is below: Dear Anneliese, I wish to share my concerns about the shocking violent Islamophobia unfolding on our streets and urge early action to fill the position of Independent advisor on Islamophobia left vacant for two years by the previous Conservative ...

"Are you ok? Was the first question Natasha Devon on LBC asked when she interviewed me about the rising Islamophobia. We really shouldn't be talking about Islamophobia. We should be talking about the tragedy of three little girls being brutally killed, the continuing violence against women and girls and the factors that led to these terrible murders. But instead, the news is focussed on extremist thugs who have spread disinformation and caused chaos on our streets. Quite rightly Starmer and Davey have called it out. And now our leaders have also said that these were not legitimate protests but riots ...

Earlier this year, residents highlighted to us that half of one of the street signs in Cambridge Street - at the junction with Oxford Street - was missing. We have requested that the roads maintenance partnership replace it and are pleased to say - as you can see from the 'before' and 'after' photographs, that a new street sign has since been installed.

The Guardian reports on research from the Resolution Foundation which has found that the two-child benefit cap has contributed to a widening gulf in regional poverty, leaving almost half of all children in some towns and cities living below the breadline. The paper says that the thinktank found that there is a "very strong relationship" between local levels of child poverty and the share of families affected by the measure introduced by the previous Conservative government: According to the foundation, the failure to tackle entrenched regional inequalities over the past three decades had been compounded by the policy, leaving almost ...
