When Bob Appleyard died in 2015 I wrote a tribute to him. I'll quote most of it below, but the reason for this post is that I have found a clip of him bowling. I can't embed it here, so hurry over to YouTube. If I'm right, Appleyard is the bowler staring his run up at 0:20 and 1:37. You can also see the England bowlers Freddie Trueman and Johnny Wardle, who is the left-arm spinner. The tall bowler hitching his trousers is Philip Hodgson, who played only a few games for Yorkshire. I believe it is from Sussex vs ...

When Jennie met Larry

Many of us have fallen completely in love with the gorgeous Jennie, Steve Darling MP's guide dog. Many of us, but maybe not Larry the No 10 cat. The two caught sight of each other as some of our Lib Dem MPs went to deliver a petition on climate change. Vet Danny Chambers, our new MP for Winchester captured the moment on camera. When @rthonjennie clocked @Number10cat Hoping not to have to put my veterinary training to use. pic.twitter.com/a5zknvyjjr — Danny Chambers MP [IMG: 🔸] [IMG: 🩺] (@DannyVet) July 24, 2024 The start of a beautiful friendship? The very first person to ask a question of Keir Starmer as Prime Minister ever was brand new Lib Dem MP for Bicester and Woodstock, Calum Miller: I asked the Prime Minister at PMQ's if he agrees that OFWAT is a broken regulator. He acknowledged mismanagement and the cost to customers, but failed to commit to scrapping it. I will keep fighting for meaningful change in the water industry, not just more of the same. pic.twitter.com/TwqMJ2WAsZ — Calum Miller (@CalumMillerLD) July 24, 2024 I congratulate the Prime Minister and welcome him to his place. I am sure he will want ...

And it was taken by Danny Chambers, who is now the Liberal Democrat MP for Winchester. When @rthonjennie clocked @Number10cat Hoping not to have to put my veterinary training to use. pic.twitter.com/a5zknvyjjr — Danny Chambers MP 🔸🩺 (@DannyVet) July 24, 2024 Incidentally, Danny has announced he will no longer practise as a vet now's he's in parliament. Which will come as a disappointment to Lord Bonkers: I have always rather envied my setters when I take them to our local vet. He doesn't ask them lots of damn-fool questions or tell them they're drinking too much. If this fellow gets ...

The future of telling?

I sat for an hour at a polling station in Camborne as part of my very long day on July 4th. I was struck by the change in voters' habits. Whereas in the past they would bring their polling cards with them, one unexpected side effect of the new rules on voter ID has brought about is that they no longer do. Now they bring ID with them. I found it very difficult to get polling numbers at all. It was only possible - and then only in about 30% of cases - to get numbers by being quite pushy ...

Lib Dem maiden speeches are coming thick and fast. Here's Josh Babarinde indulging in some pier bragging and talking about the strength of a diverse community and the importance of care and compassion in everything the state does: It was inspirational to listen to the story of the hon. Member for Bassetlaw (Jo White) and her determination to never stop dreaming. It was also inspirational and fantastic to hear maiden speeches from many others. I was interested to hear the competition among some Members about the length of piers in seaside towns. I hail from the great town of Eastbourne. ...

Thank you From our low of 6 seats in 1959 through to our then peak of 63 in 2006, gaining 57 seats took 47 years. We've now gained 61 seats in just 5 years. It was an amazing team achievement, and we all should be proud of the roles we have played. Perhaps the most amazing helper is our kind deliverer Geoff, who both campaigned locally and in a target seat, a mere 79 years(!) after he delivered his first leaflet as a very young deliverer in the 1945 general election. Whether it was your first or your twenty-second general ...

Harris Academy is reaching out to local charitable organisations about their Youth and Philanthropy initiative. This initiative does have a financial prize given to the top 3 charities chosen, and is also a great way to inform young people about your organisation and the work you do, as well as young people gaining insight into the work and reach of the third sector. YPI is an active citizenship initiative which empowers young people to make a difference in our community. Students at school learn about the needs of Dundee communities, and the role that they can play, while developing key ...

Costly Tory decisions

The public finances are in a mess, and one of the reasons for that are decisions taken by Tory Ministers in pursuit of their own 'anti-woke' agenda. Of course the main reason is the billions of pounds lost in dodgy PPE deals and also the struggling economy, caught up in needless bureaucracy because of Brexit. But let us not forget some of the other bizarre schemes. The Guardian reports on the revelation that the Conservative government spent £700m of taxpayers' money on the failed Rwanda deportation scheme, described by the new Home Secretary as a "costly con": Yvette Cooper described ...
