This is a wonderful compilation of footage showing some of the last t rains to serve Nottingham Victoria station - the last of all ran on 4 September 1967 - and then its demolition. Victoria was the city's main station on the Great Central Railway's London Extension, and opened to passengers on 9 March 1899. The site was cleared for the builders of the station by the railway contractors Logan & Hemingway - as in this blog's hero J.W. Logan MP.

Stretch your mind back to the early-to-mid 1970s. If you can't, just ask your grandparents. In those years, Close Up toothpaste was a big seller in this country. It was a clear red jelly with a flavour of cloves or cinnamon. It was the brand my mother bought. Then it seemed to disappear from supermarket shelves and I've not seen it on sale since. Why the vanishing act? As I remember it, there were news stories about people having an allergic reaction to Close Up, though not in any great numbers. More importantly, I suspect, there was a major report ...

Here is the text of the maiden speech of Olly Glover MP for Didcot and Wantage, made in the House of Commons made yesterday 22nd July at 22:04: Thank you, Mr Deputy Speaker, for the opportunity to give my maiden speech today. I aspire to match the eloquence of the previous speakers in this debate, including Robin Swann, who gave the most recent maiden speech; his passion for his constituency is very clear. I start by paying tribute to my immediate predecessor, David Johnston. I admire the fact that Mr Johnston entered politics because of his passion for social mobility. ...

I just happened to be going through some old photos – as you do. I chanced upon this photo from our Bournemouth conference last September. Those of us who have attended the odd conference know the drill – get together some candidates from our target seats for a fun photo on the sea front and then watch them not being elected in the subsequent general election. It is all depressingly familiar – except this time all the candidates (including two sitting MPs) in this photo were elected – with combined majorities of 60,997! It's all going to take a while ...

Trudiagnostic have changed the way they handle the Rejuvenation Olympics Leaderboard algorithm. The result of this initially was that I was globally no 40 and have now dropped to 44. Trudiagnostic are a US company that get samples of blood and they look at the DNA to see which parts of the DNA have methyl groups (CH3) attached to them. These modifications to DNA are called methylation markers.

In October, I talked about the Liberal Democrats last year becoming the Official Opposition by 2025. It led to a dynamic debate within Lib Dem Voice, but nonetheless it is a crucial debate that we need to have on the direction of our party, if we wish to be a party of Government again. It is an important debate we need to have as we are in the midst of a possible realignment within British Politics, as the Conservative Party could be 'consigned to history'. I want to talk now, in more depth, about the second seismic political event in ...

The Welsh Labour schism

I've just come across an interesting blog on the Vaughan Gething affair from the Labour Senedd Member for Llanelli, Lee Waters. It is an honest and searing appraisal of what went worng with Gething's tenure as First Minister as well as the problems facing the Welsh Labour Party going forward. Waters starts by saying that Welsh Labour are in a pickle. He says that after 25 years as the largest party in the Senedd, and 102 years as the party of Wales, Labour have become the establishment. He adds that while their opposition is weak then, like many political systems ...
