Both an impressive performance by the Lib Dem fundraisers and also a sign of how poorly the Conservative campaign is doing: the declarable* Lib Dem donations added up to a greater sum that those for the Conservatives: Rishi Sunak's Conservatives struggled to raise money in the second week of the election campaign, bringing in just £290,000 from private donors, while Labour received a windfall of £4.4m... The Liberal Democrats received £335,000 in the second week of the campaign. [The Guardian] * i.e. donations about the declarable limits, so excluding small donations. Embed from Getty ImagesI don't look at the Spectator much these days, but Stephen Daisley makes an important on Just Stop Oil's stunts: It is not true that spraying orange cornflour on Stonehenge or chucking tomato soup on a van Gogh does no long-term harm. It undermines the unspoken system of trust upon which so many social arrangements are predicated. Every time Just Stop Oil pulls one of these stunts, it increases the likelihood that museums, galleries and heritage sites will put more distance between their wares and the general public. Places and objects that, at present, any ordinary member ...

Yesterday the Liberal Democrats held two council seats in Oxfordshire. Because of ill health, Richard Webber had been forced to resign both the seats he held. They were the Sutton Courtenay ward of Vale of White Horse District Council and the Sutton Courtenay and Marcham ward of Oxfordshire County Council. And both seats were held for the party in the resultant by-elections yesterday by Peter Stevens. Andrew Teale will tell you all about the surprisingly industrial geography of the seats, but the village of Sutton Courtenay itself is on the Thames. And in its churchyard you will find the tomb ...

Six principal authority council by-elections this week, and all with a Lib Dem candidate. That's up an impressive three from the last time these wards were up. First off, what could have been a tricky Lib Dem defence in the West Country, as Andrew Teale explains: The Liberal Democrats are defending this council by-election after Jamie Frost didn't turn up to any council meetings within six months, an action which doesn't get you the coveted Pointless trophy: instead it gets you disqualified. It appears that Frost was also kicked out of the party for the same reason at some point ...

The state of the road surface in Hillside Drive is now extremely poor and, following complaints from residents, we raised the possibility of resurfacing it with the Roads Maintenance Partnership. The Roads Maintenance Partnership's Senior Engineer has responded helpfully as follows : "I am busy compiling through condition scores the schemes for detailed scoring I will add in Hillside Drive so it is scored for potential inclusion in future programmes."

The wrong sort of gamble

When Rishi Sunak opted for 4th July as the date of General Election most commentators thought it was a massive gamble. Little did we suspect that there was another sort of gambling going on at the same time, and in a way that has got us all asking: 'Are these people for real?' Following on from Sunak's PPS, Craig Williams admitting that he placed a bet on the date of the general election, it transpires that another one of the Prime Minister's aides is caught up in a similar betting scandal. The Guardian reports that a second Conservative candidate and ...
