As we reported yesterday, the Scottish Lib Dems launched their manifesto at the beautiful Craigie's Farm near South Queensferry. If you are in the area, do pop in for a visit, pick some fruit, enjoy the gorgeous views and buy some lovely food and drink from the shop and cafe. You can even order online. The event looked great. There were a couple of hiccups though. Frankly, Wendy Chamberlain should get danger money for appearing with leaders. In 2021, Willie Rennie accidentally hit her with a shinty ball during a photo opportunity for the Holyrrod Elections. Yesterday, they let Alex ...
It occurs to me that the last three films I have seen at the cinema have all been documentaries: Eric Ravilious - Drawn to War, Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger and - today - Wilding. As the shortcomings of Steve Coogan's The Lost King show, dressing up a true story in a contrived drama does not necessarily do that story any favours. (You can download a good article on the film by Mike Pitts from the British Council for Archaeology site.) But then I read fewer novels and more factual books these days too. Anyway, Wilding ...
George Parker and Anna Gross have been to Yeovil for the Financial Times, and who should they meet there but the leader of the Liberal Democrats? Sir Ed Davey, Liberal Democrat leader, has claimed his party could unexpectedly win back a host of Conservative seats in its former South West heartlands, announcing a last-minute "Project A30" election offensive. Davey told the Financial Times in an interview that some of the seats had previously been seen as "out of reach" but were now in range if the party managed to raise more money from donors for last-minute campaigning. On a visit ...
"As our MP, it has been my honour, pride and joy to serve you, fight for you and get things done": Liberal Democrat MP Tim Farron giving his closing speech at an election hustings.
As the idea of banning opinion polls during elections is being discussed, here's what I wrote in my polling book about why no, they shouldn't be banned.
Who is the best choice to vote for if you want to see the Conservatives lose in the Harpenden and Berkhamsted constituency?

Many thanks to the reader who nominated the Telegraph for this blog's Headline of the Day Award. The story may be behind a paywall, but the headline is in plain sight. I had some clear-the-air talks with the judges yesterday evening about their insistence on choosing videos for my blog, and... here are Elton John and the Muppets.
I'm loath to criticise my employer, but I'm not sure this is Terribly Fair. After I gained Market Harborough North in an historic by-election, I became quite friendly with my Labour opponent, who was a member of the Rutland Morris Men. I went round with them one Saturday afternoon as they performed at a couple of village events, and I don't think I've ever drunk so much beer in my life. Friday Who should be in the Bonkers' Arms this evening but our local side of morris dancers? We chuckle over the events of 23 April - the day before ...
Today is the last opportunity to register to vote for the 4 July election (registration closes at midnight). Nearly everyone reading this will be registered to vote. But what about your children and grandchildren? You friends? If they are 18 years old by 4 July they should register to vote. Some people who have moved house have not changed their address and need to re-register. Registration is a simple online process that requires no more than you to give your personal details and your NI number. There are a surprising number of people not registered to vote. The Electoral Commission ...
Matthew Green, Liberal Democrat candidate for South Shropshire, on why he is campaigning to become o...
By Matthew Green Now we are in the second half of the General Election campaign, I wanted to take the opportunity to explain why I decided to stand again after a break from being your local Member of Parliament. It was not a straightforward decision for me. Despite the many people who were asking me to stand as the Liberal Democrat candidate, it would have been easier for me not to do so. I decided to stand for three reasons: first the past years have been a disastrous period of governance by the Conservatives. They need to be removed from ...
They're registered to vote, are you? Today is the last day left to register to vote in the UK Parliament general election on 4th July. If you are not already on the electoral roll, make sure you register before midnight. Register now at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
Just when the Tories hoped that it had gone away the Guardian reports that controversy over the way government awarded contracts during the covid pandemic has reared its head again due to a row that has broken out in the USA. According to the paper the founder of Innova Medical Group, who says his business collected $2bn (£1.6bn) in profits, one of the largest fortunes banked by any medical supplier during the scramble for lifesaving equipment in the early months of the pandemic, has been hit by a storm of claims and counter-claims. This has led to Innova's boss, Charles ...
