The BBC is holding a debate between the five main party leaders in Scotland tonight. Here is Alex Cole-Hamilton's opening statement: "People ask me why I'm always smiling – why, when politics is such a serious business the Liberal Democrats seem to enjoy it so much. "Well, the simple reason is we love what we do. Serving our communities is why we get up in the morning. "In the next Parliament we'll be working for a better Britain, to restore your faith in politics and fix our broken relationship with Europe. "We'll get you fast access to GPs and dentists, ...

One thing that struck me during the EU referendum was how much better the Leave campaign was at staging events and stunts that appealed to the media. All we had to offer was George Osborne threatening to put your taxes up. I wrote that two years ago, defending the Show Boris the Door stunt with which we celebrated Richard Foord's victory in the Tiverton and Honiton by-election. Since then, cheesy Liberal Democrat stunts to mark by-election victories have become a thing - and a thing the media expect and are happy to photograph. That lesson has been carried over into ...

Embed from Getty ImagesWho says? The Conservative Party, that's who. Here's Christian Calgie on the Express website this afternoon: The Conservative Party is currently spending around £2,300 on four adverts, which include a graph suggesting the party could fall to just 57 seats, its worst result in its near-300-year history. Meanwhile they warn Labour could win 490 seats, with the Liberal Democrats becoming the official opposition with 61 seats. Up to 200,000 Facebook users so far have seen the advert, which aims to warn those flirting with Reform UK not to let Keir Starmer win a landslide majority. The ad ...

Why it matters A stark fact from this May's local elections: just 97 more people switching from our opponents to us would have given us outright control of three more local councils. That is the brutal reality of first past the post elections. Votes in the key places count for much more than votes in safe seats and in lost causes. It is why we want to get rid of first past the post. To do that, we first have to win under first past the post. That means concentrating our efforts where they can make the most difference to ...

The preamble to the Liberal Democrat constitution states the party exists to ensure "no-one shall be enslaved by poverty". The many housing crises we currently face are plunging millions into poverty, substandard homes and an unfair and unaffordable housing market. People suffer worse health, children don't receive the opportunities they deserve and our economy is less productive because our housing sector is broken. Fixing the housing crisis is central to creating the more equal and fair society our party believes in. I was delighted to read the Liberal Democrat manifesto for the 2024 General Election. It offers a clear, comprehensive, ...

I have never known a Conservative Party split so publicly, but to have it do so in the middle of a general election is unprecedented. It is actually getting embarrassing. The Guardian reports that Tory rightwingers are planning to present Rishi Sunak with demands for tougher action on immigration and human rights law before the election if the prime minister's manifesto promises on Tuesday fall flat. They say that prominent party figures including Suella Braverman and Robert Jenrick are said by Tory insiders to be among those waiting to see how the manifesto is received by the public before they ...
