My latest video from John Rogers is a real treat. John and the daddy of psychogeography, Iain Sinclair, visit Northampton and walk its streets so that Sinclair can visit Alan Moore. I have been to several of the sites they visit and can help on a couple of points. St Peter's is looked after by the Churches Conservation Trust, and it is some years since I have found it open myself. The trust has been restoring the historic pub next door to the church with a view to moving its national office there. Perhaps the church will be open more ...

From the Guardian this evening: Jeremy Hunt has warned the Conservatives that elections are won from the centre ground, amid fears that the party could lurch to the right in response to Nigel Farage's return to frontline politics. In an interview with the Guardian, the chancellor suggested the party must remain a "broad church" despite concerns that Reform UK could cost the Tories as many as 60 seats at the general election. It's several years too late, but at least Hunt has said something about his party's rapid journey to a strange planet many light years away. But Margaret Thatcher ...

Below I've lifted one of my favourite even election maps from the vault – Local Elections 1995. As you can see plenty of amber, a profusion of red, almost no blue on the map. John Major took as big a kicking here as he did in 1997. Why was it quite so bad? It's my ... Continue reading Election 2024: Shattered dreams and no real plan

Love and tenderness are not words you generally associate with Party Election Broadcasts. Our one, to be broadcast tonight is the exception. Ed Davey tells his story of life as a carer for his mum and his son. He talks about the millions in similar situations, keeping going with love. That, he says, is who I will fight for every day. It's just incredible. From The Guardian Davey told the Guardian that the decision to allow himself to be filmed at home and with his son followed a "long chat" with his wife, Emily, and was intended to help highlight ...

[IMG: Otto von Bearsmarck, autism support bear in a green rucksack] In January 2024, I was diagnosed as autistic. This diagnosis confirmed what we had suspected for some time. Nothing has changed since then, and I am still me. But, with the diagnosis, it is easier to explain to others why I react in ways that most people do not. I still find it difficult when things are done in different ways. I like the routines. The main place that this comes out is in my dialysis clinic. Since I help with the setting of my machine that makes things ...

In a twist worthy of a Shakespearean comedy, The Financial Times—yes, the very bastion of capitalism—has thrown its weight behind the call to increase taxes on the wealthy. It's as if Ebenezer Scrooge himself woke up, not just offering Bob Cratchit Christmas off, but also turned his business into a consumer mutual. This surprising endorsement underscores a deeper, more troubling reality: the Tories have, over time, alienated their once staunchest supporters — pragmatic economic thinkers and investors. The people who'd toast their morning coffee to the Conservatives, secure in the knowledge that their financial acumen was reflected in sound government ...

Social Media bites

With so many last minute candidates being put into place before close of nominations on Friday, it was inevitable that some studious journalist would be digging away in their social media accounts for a story or two. Here in Swansea, the imposition of a London-based thinktank boss with no connection to the city has aroused some interest, but in his case he appears to have already scoured his own twitter account for anything interesting. That though, has not stopped the inquisitive. Nation Cymru reports that Labour's Swansea West parachutist, Torsten Bell has deleted social media posts from 2023 that conflict ...
