Jane MacLeod, who was the organisation's chief in-house lawyer between 2015 and 2019, was due to appear as a witness next month to explain her role in the civil litigation that fully exposed the scandal. During my book-hunting escapades, I stumbled upon Harold MacMillan's "The Middle Way." Its weathered cover, nestled among forgotten tomes, bore striking images: Mussolini's Fascist emblem and the Soviet hammer with sickle; symbols of Europe's political divide in 1938. "To my right, I saw something black running, and assumed it was a sheepdog," she said. "Then I did ...

This year his wife, Erica, will support him as Lady Mayoress – she was Lord Mayor herself 10 years ago. Richard was first elected to Liverpool City Council, in 1975. Since then he has been a councillor for 47 years, and was Leader of the Lib Dem group until last year. Many of us in local government have had much to thank Richard for in a wider context. He was Leader of the Liberal Democrats in ...

Nation Cymru, which is of course funded by the Welsh Government, is showing an admirable independence in its reporting on the Welsh First Minister recently, even suggesting that his time in office may be coming to an end. Lettuce, anybody? Their latest piece quotes an unnamed Welsh Labour source as saying the sacking of Hannah Blythyn as a minister, for supposedly leaking damaging WhatsApp messages, brings closer the tipping point when the Labour Party accepts that keeping Vaughan Gething in office is more damaging than getting rid of him: Ms Blythyn's dismissal - for allegedly leaking iMessages to NationCymru that ...
