From the Leicester Mercury: The leader of the Conservative opposition on Leicester City Council has returned to Labour. Councillor Deepak Bajaj became the Tories' second sitting member when he defected from the Labour Group in September 2022. At the time, he called out the Labour-run council saying it "continuously blocks support from reaching those who need it within our city". The authority needs leadership that "upholds the highest standards of democracy and honesty, and unfortunately the current administration is not that," he added. Now, a little more than 18 months later, he has announced his return to the fold. He ...

Brook reaches a wonderful century of 69 balls with 14x4s and 2x6s. We have declared on 264-6, claiming one batting point, in order to improve our first-innings over-rate.#YORvLEI pic.twitter.com/knvNOXMBh5 — Yorkshire CCC (@YorkshireCCC) April 8, 2024 Imagine you were in the crowd on the last afternoon of weather-ruined county game. England's best young batsman has just reached his hundred. What would you like to happen next?Harry Brook goes on batting until the umpires call play off;Yorkshire declare and hurry though a few meaningless overs to get their over rate up.I think we'd all vote for 1., but 2. is what ...

The latest episode of Never Mind The Bar Charts took an unexpected turn when I was discussing the track record of polls closing in previous Parliaments with Professor Will Jennings. One of the most dramatic such examples was with Jeremy Corbyn in 2017... so perhaps he should be the role model for Rishi Sunak as he looks to rescue the Conservatives? Feedback very welcome, and do share this podcast with others who you think may enjoy it. Show notes Have the polls closed in previous Parliaments? What are MRPs and can we trust them? Voting intention by supermarket. Sign up ...

In war it is good to remember two bits of age-old wisdom, if unnecessary deaths are to be avoided; 'know your enemy' and 'don't believe your own propaganda'. Ignoring these two adages led to the West's humiliating defeat in Afghanistan, and Western-led conflicts in Iraq, Libya, Syria, Saharan Africa and Yemen, which have all been catastrophic for Western interests. We now have a parallel in Ukraine. As I wrote in LDV on 11th Feb 2023: In April Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said 'We want to see Russia weakened to the degree that it can't do the kinds of things that ...

His eyes disquiet us.Affectionate, devoted, eagerand intent, attempting toingratiate himself – or spring But veiled with the suspicion that would flare without warning into defence, into attack, a flashthat bared those teeth in anger, unprovoked; to bite the handthat fed, that cared for him... Blood and bruises, tetanus and shock. The curtains draw a few more times, drawn closed on [...]

Changing of the guard today at Buckingham Palace was different from usual - French soldiers were taking part as part of the celebration of the Entente Cordial which was signed back in 1904. The decision to commit the UK to involvement in the affairs of Europe by aligning ourselves with France in the face of a growing German threat to the stability of the Continent was strengthened over the

It seems that people attending last autumn's Liberal Democrat Conference were targeted by a fake Grindr profile asking for political gossip. I'm happy to report that the Lib Dems involved saw through this trick and, in particular, that not a single one of us took a photograph of his penis and sent it to a random stranger. If only Conservative MPs could say the same. The story is in the Express: Attendees of the conference have revealed to the Express they were messaged by an account on the app, posing as a man in his late 20s who asked at ...

I'm no great fan of the way the cricket season is currently organised either. Out of fairness, however, I should say that I'm planning to a trip to Grace Road on Friday, to thwart the England and Wales Cricket Board's desire to destroy the County Championship in general and Leicestershire in particular, and the forecast is for a lovely warm day. I can't see Lord Bonkers writing 'inuit', but I feel sure he would disagree with Homer Simpson's contention that "Vampires are make-believe, just like elves, gremlins and Eskimos". Wednesday A bitingly cold day at Uppingham as Rutland begins its ...

An unnecessary scare was started by Ludlow Town Council before Easter and was not corrected for a week. In an emphatic statement on its website, it stated: "In two months time, Tesco is planning to close the busy post office in their One-Stop shop on Tower Street, Ludlow. The town centre post office is Ludlow's main post office and the closure would be a major blow to the local economy and to the services which many people rely on." It had not checked the accuracy of this statement and only corrected it a week later to say the post office ...
