Government childcare announcement: More Conservative chaos hurting families Only 0.1% of police dedicated to rural crime teams Government childcare announcement: More Conservative chaos hurting families Responding to the Government's childcare announcment, Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson Munira Wilson MP said: This latest Conservative chaos is hitting families hard. Parents are seriously worried about what the Government's botched childcare expansion will mean for them. Free hours are no good if parents can't find a good nursery or childminder for their child - and thanks to Conservative underfunding, more than 3,000 providers have closed in the last year alone. Instead of plunging families ...

The death of the dramatist and screenwriter Trevor Griffiths has reminded me of the Seventies, when British television companies showed political dramas in primetime. Griffiths's contribution was Bill Brand, about which the BFI's Screenonline site is positively rhapsodic: Bill Brand (ITV, 1976) was an epic attempt to lay bare the nature of political power in the UK, and more specifically to analyse if, and how, the socialist struggle could be furthered by the parliamentary Labour movement. Its origins can be seen in Trevor Griffiths' early Play for Today, 'All Good Men' (BBC, tx. 31/01/1974), where the tension between the social ...

This morning, former Ludlow MP Matthew Green has announced that he will be replacing Chris Naylor as the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the new constituency of South Shropshire at the forthcoming general election. We were all saddened when Chris had to stand down as the Lib Dem candidate. He was working flat out meeting people and engaging in local campaigns when he had to halt due to medical advice. He'd had been a great MP. Matthew Green now steps into his shoes and has the experience to win the seat. The Conservatives have chosen a lacklustre candidate in Stuart Anderson. ...

Well done to Lib Dem Voice editorial team member Mary Reid, who once again excelled at the subtle April Fools post on this website. "Another bank holiday?" stimulated about 30 comments debating the whys and wherefores of Bank Holidays and Saint Days, down to a spat about the pronunciation of "Æthelthryth". We did think that proposing a variable bank holiday for the Prime Minister's Birthday and one for Flora Poil, the "Victorian social reformer" might give the game away. Party President Mark Pack had me going with his news that the party has a new phone app for leaflet delivery. ...

Matthew Green, who was Liberal Democrat MP for Ludlow between 2001 and 2005, is to fight South Shropshire at the general election. South Shropshire is made up of the old Ludlow constituency, with the addition of a couple of wards that were previously in Shrewsbury and Atcham. Chris Naylor stood down as our PPC for South Shropshire last month for health reasons.

The rest of the week's weather is going to be showers, on and off. And Ludlow's roads will have roadworks, on and off. A truce was negotiated on roadworks over Easter. The lane closure on Station Drive was lifted. It is expected back any day and will be in place until lift works are completed. The troublesome roadworks on the Foldgate Lane Sheet Road junction were removed for the weekend. The contractors infilled the trench and laid a tarmac temporary patch. Work on the sewer connection is expected to begin again today and the lights will be back until this ...

In many ways the controversial Criminal Justice Bill currently being considered by Parliament is classic Tory. It was first introduced when Suella Braverman - who branded homelessness a "lifestyle choice" - was Home Secretary, and includes a clampdown on rough sleepers. It creates new offences which would see people sleeping in doorways and on the streets punished for being a public nuisance. It is partly reassuring therefore to see the bills most illiberal measures being challenged by a number of Tory backbenchers. The Mirror reports that the Prime Minister is under growing pressure to abandon proposed new laws which would ...
