It was 19 years ago today and it was perhaps the best night to be a Chelsea fan since the FA Cup replay of 1970." Two-one down from the first leg, Chelsea were not afraid. They attacked Barcelona and were 3-0 up within 19 minutes, but the visitors fought back and, as the goals went in, Chelsea came to need a two-goal lead on the night to qualify. (Remember the away goals rule, kids?) I have a memory that when Chelsea were rocking at 3-2, John Terry gambled and got away with a strong challenge in his own box to ...

There were 4 principal council by-elections this week, including a rare Wednesday by-election. It was all change as each contest resulted in a change of representation. There was a fantastic Lib Dem gain from the Conservatives on Mid Devon District Council in Upper Yeo Valley and Tawe ward. Congratulations to Councillor Alex White and the team in Mid Devon on winning over 50% of the vote and increasing the Lib Dem share by 11%. A brilliant result. Mid Devon DC, Upper Yeo Valley and Tawe Liberal Democrats (Alex White): 405 (52%, +11%) Conservative: 226 (29%, -14.5%) Labour: 91 (12%, -16%) ...

The Mirror reports on analysis by The Resolution Foundation that has found that pensioners will be clobbered by Tory tax changes with millions of retirees facing an average £1,000 hit to their incomes. The paper says that economists have warned that older people are the biggest losers from Jeremy Hunt's Budget, with critics hitting out at the "disgraceful £8 billion pensioner tax bombshell" concealed in the small print, They add that analysis has found that the elderly will be left counting the cost of the chancellor's plans to cut National Insurance by 2p from next month in a £10million bid ...

The reaction to the possible closure of the Craven Arms Household Recycling Centre (HRC) has been fierce. I have not heard one message of support for the closure. The plans are not finalised yet but Shropshire Council seem determined to close two household recycling centres whatever the consequences for residents, the climate and fly-tipping. More than 6,000 people have signed the petition against closure. https://bit.ly/cravenarmsrecyling We have to be realistic here. We didn't light the fire spreading through local government finances. It has been burning for a long while and the leadership at Shropshire Council over the last 13 years ...

Last week there was a debate in the House of Commons on the subject: International Women's Day: Language in Politics. The actual text of the motion was: That this House has considered the use of language in politics in light of International Women's Day; agrees that the respectful use of language is an important feature of a strong and inclusive democracy; and calls on all parliamentary candidates to pledge that respectful language will be used at all times in the upcoming General Election campaigning period. Following the opening speech by Dame Maria Miller, Wera Hobhouse asked this question: The right ...

The Joy of Six 1210

Adam Bychawski on how the Tories have driven local council services into bankruptcy: "Britain is so broke that it can't afford lollipop people any more. Councils are having to turn off the fountains in Nottingham and dim the street lights in Birmingham. In some areas, public toilets are a thing of the past. Libraries might soon follow them." "Since 1997, the number of black professional cricketers in England has dwindled by 75 per cent. A 2020 report by Sport England found that whereas approximately 36 per cent of adult involvement in recreational cricket is 'non-white', black participation was so low ...
