I'm backing Beveridge

When I was at university, occasionally people would ask me why I was a Liberal (not too many about at the time), if I was being glib I'd say, "50% is down to Keynes, 50% is down to Beveridge." There are other important Liberal thinkers and policy makers of course, but Keynes and Beveridge quite ... Continue reading I'm backing Beveridge

Mental health, we need to talk. In 2020, a study suggested that mental distress had risen almost ten points, in less than one year, to 27.3% of the population and others, more recently, suggest the number may be even higher today. It frustrates me that it is only in recent years that the conversation around it has become mainstream. People have been having to deal with it for centuries, way too often alone, yet today some people ostracise the younger generation for now actually wanting to talk about it, even with the discussion around it being mainstream. I find that ...

The Conservative campaign in the Wellingborough by-election has run into trouble over two of the people who have nominated their candidate Helen Harrison. They are pithily described by the Sun as: a benefit fraudster and ex-cop who covered up drink driving. And the paper goes on to give full details: One of Harrison's endorsers was Matt Binley, the son of Northampton South's former MP, Brian Binley. It was reported in the North Northants Journal that the ex-cop was slapped with a four month jail sentence in 2010 for conspiring to cover up drink driving. Having smashed the car Binley then ...

This is a key committee which scrutinises the party's accounts, in co-operation with HQ staff. It also examines the way the party's resources, including employees, are being deployed. For both subjects, the group spots areas where improvement is needed and monitors progress. Decisions are made relative the handling of the party's money and people. I've served on this committee. I enjoyed working in collaboration with the party's excellent staff and was able to use some of the ...

The Redditch Standard reports: Councillor Kerrie Miles of Batchley and Brockhill has said the Lib Dems are the only party that offer 'real solutions': "Now more than ever, it's crucial to have an economy that is fair, prosperous, and innovative, promoting both opportunity and well-being. "Access to good public services and a robust social safety net is vital, as is a sustainable and flourishing environment with equitable access to nature for all. "The Liberal Democrats are the only party that is committed to delivering these ideals." ... Chair of Redditch Liberal Democrats, Andy Thompson added:... "She is a true community ...

Dirty Britain

Just how far the UK has fallen in terms of environmental sustainability is evidenced by this article in the Guardian which records that eighty-three per cent of English rivers contain evidence of high pollution caused by sewage and agricultural waste. The paper says that hundreds of anglers took part in the study, organised by the Angling Trust, after being angered by the brown blooms of sewage in the waters they painstakingly tend for the benefit of fish: Six hundred and forty-one anglers from 240 angling clubs now regularly monitor pollution in 190 rivers across 60 catchments. Between them, they have ...
