So, if you're the Tories and you're lagging in the polls, you've run out of ideas and you're basically a hot mess masquerading as a Government, but you want to grip on to power because you think you are entitled to it, what do you do? You can't gerrymander like the Republicans have done in states all over the US to ensure that they run State legislatures because our boundary setting process is independent. Well, you could give yourself a massive financial boost by raising the campaign spending limits to a level at which you can comfortably outspend your rivals. ...

To labour a point from my previous posts, last weekend saw me too heading on a train to a midlands city to watch a sporting event, albeit a different sport and a different city. In the last few years, Coventry Rugby Club, under the energetic leadership of Chairman Jon Sharp, have been undergoing something of a renaissance after three decades of decline punctuated by crisis that on more than one occasion threatened to put the club out of business altogether. The problem they face in any attempt to get back to the top of English rugby is the obstacles put ...

A British Transport Police survey published today revealed that a third of women had said that they had suffered some level of sexual harassment on their daily commute by train or tube: The recent survey also shows that half (51%) of those who have been victims of sexual offending say that other passengers tried to help them, yet only one in five (18%) people who have witnessed sexual harassment have reported it to police. Contrary to popular belief, crime data also shows that most sexual offending takes place during the evening rush hour period (5-7pm) in busy train carriages. Just ...

Here's a clip of the Radio One and Radio Luxemburg DJ Stuart Henry in action and talking about his approach to the job. I wrote about him when choosing Queen Bitch by David Bowie on Sunday. A product of Stewart's Melville College and Glasgow College of Dramatic Art, Henry was an actor before he went into music radio. His career on the pirate stations was short-lived because he suffered terribly with seasickness, but he found safe harbour at the BBC until his health began to decline. In his obituary of Henry, Chris Welch quoted Johnny Beerling, a former controller of ...

Here's a new edition of the science podcast The Studies Show. It comes to the conclusion that the case for using phonics, and nothing but phonics, in teaching children to read is not as strong as its adherents like to claim: Teaching kids how to read is amazingly controversial. Or at least, it was controversial until recently, when we achieved a proper scientific consensus that the best way to teach them is to use systematic phonics. This method has seen big successes here in the UK, and is helping thousands of children achieve proper literacy. ...that's the story, anyway. But ...

Imagine if last year Jeremy Corbyn had won the general election with a small majority, his government had ground to a halt with the Lords rejecting legislation and then the Queen just sacked him.

The Guardian reports on a statement by the head of parliament's complaints watchdog that she "does not know" if the Palace of Westminster is a safe workplace for women: Thea Walton joined the Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme in March with a vow to build trust in the watchdog. Established in 2018, the ICGS processes official HR complaints and also assesses complaints made on the parliamentary estate against a number of codes including the palace's sexual misconduct, bullying and harassment policy. Since the last general election, 24 MPs have faced at least a one-day suspension, according to Chris Bryant, the ...
