What we need now is a silent film showing the remains of the narrow-gauge railway that served the lead mine at Snailbeach in Shropshire. I know I spoil you, gentle reader, but you're worth it.

The footpath between Tollgate Road and Sheet Road past the children's play area has been blocked off by Shropshire Council. This is madness. An area of the play area fence has fallen because Shropshire Council failed to conduct routine maintenance. The fence is not a danger to users of the path. So why block the path? The fence collapsed during the week, perhaps due to storm damage or just pushed over. The wooden supports for the fence were rotten at the base and have been for a long while. If someone was pushed towards it in jest, it would have ...

There is much confusion among bus users in Ludlow today after Shropshire Council put up timetables saying the 701 town service does not run on Saturdays. This is a busy town service that travels to and from the town centre serving Henley Road, the Bringewoods, Dodmore and Sandpits. Despite the Shropshire Council timetable, the 701 continues to run on Saturdays. It was running today. I have spoken to passengers that have been anxious that the 701 no longer runs on a busy day for shopping. Council officers should provide new timetables immediately. There are no plans to cancel the Saturday ...

Writing for The Guardian, Lib Dem MP Layla Moran and Labour MP Alex Sobel say: Much has been said in the past three weeks about the tragedy of Israelis and Palestinians, not least in the Houses of Parliament. For us, it is deeply personal. We are the only two British MPs with parents who grew up in Israel and Palestine. Though we represent different political parties, this is not the first time we've worked together on this conflict. However, we feel this is the most urgent, and most important, intervention we have had to make. Israelis and Palestinians need support ...

Embed from Getty ImagesClaiming an exclusive, the Guardian reports that three senior Liberal Democrat politicians, Vince Cable, Chris Huhne and Norman Lamb, are suing the publisher of the Sun and the defunct News of the World, claiming that their phones were hacked for stories or to "exert political influence", including when Rupert Murdoch was seeking approval for a takeover of BSkyB. Journalists working at Murdoch's newspapers are said to have unlawfully targeted the former business secretary Vince Cable as well as Chris Huhne, a former energy and climate change secretary, and Norman Lamb, a whip and sometime adviser to the ...

Bad water

I suppose it was inevitable: an incompetent government struggling to manage appalling pollution in our rivers and on our beaches decide the best way to win the propaganda war is to relax the monitoring regime, so people will no longer know how bad it really is. The Guardian reports that the UK government is to diverge from the EU's standards for monitoring water quality in England, a move that has led Campaigners to fear that the change of approach could lead to more pollution in England's rivers and waterways if the new measuring methods are less rigorous: While in the ...

The Liberal Democrat MP for Bath writes: Over the past few months there has been a steady stream of news stories about harassment in workplaces across the UK, from the NHS and regulatory bodies to large corporations. Yet many incidences of harassment still go unreported and with no action taken to redress the perpetrators. Research by the House of Commons suggests 40 percent of women and 18 percent of men in the UK have experienced some form of workplace harassment. We Liberal Democrats have continually campaigned hard to protect women and girls. In 2018, as a new MP, I campaigned to ...

MAGA has won the Speakership of America's House of Representatives. It is difficult to be more MAGA-like than Louisiana Congressman Mike Johnson. He is opposed to Ukraine; supports Israel; maintains that Trump won the 2020 election; is a born again evangelical Christian who quotes the Bible whenever possible; voted against the Biden budget; is a member of the right-wing Freedom caucus; is opposed to same-sex marriage; opposes abortion and has Trump's endorsement. Moderate Republicans – and just about everyone else – were terrified at the prospect of the election of right-wing "legislative terrorist" Jim Jordan. He seemed more intent on ...

With a by-election on the cards in Wellingborough after the decision to suspend Peter Bone for six weeks, it's time to take a look at the town's Conservatives. What sort of candidate will they choose? What sort of campaign, if given their head party by the national party, will they fight? We have a clue in the shape of a document circulated to Tory activists in the town in 2020 and leaked to the Huffington Post. The website's report on it said: In a section calling for grassroots campaigners of Boris Johnson's party to "learn" from Trump, the document says ...
