From the Leicester Mercury: One of the most significant sites of Loughborough's industrial heyday looks set to be changed forever, with the news that much of 'the Brush' could be bulldozed. The owners of the Falcon Works Industrial Estate hope to demolish a number of buildings on the Nottingham Road site, including parts of the former Brush plant, but intend to leave the iconic 1920s building referred to in planning documents as the Brush building, sometimes also called the Falcon Building, but known to former employees has '24 shop'. The Brush works is a large and sprawling site, and the ...
On Sunday, I joined volunteers from Planting Up Whickham to strip out the flowerbeds on Church Green. My job was to load all the garden waste into my pickup and take it down to my farm where I will turn it into compost. I filmed this video while the work was taking place.
Embed from Getty ImagesThe Guardian reports: More than 1 million children experienced destitution last year - meaning their families could not afford to adequately feed, clothe or clean them, or keep them warm - according to a major study which reveals an explosion of extreme poverty in the UK. Severe material hardship was "no longer a rare occurrence", the study found, with rates of destitution more than doubling in the last five years as a result of benefit cuts and cost of living pressures, leaving struggling households increasingly reliant on regular charity handouts. The study in question is included in ...
Oh valiant hearts, who to your glory came Through dust and conflict and conflict and through battle flame; Tranquil you lie, your knightly virtue proved, Your memory hallowed in the land you loved. Proudly you gathered, rank on rank, to war; As who had heard God's message from afar; All you had hoped for, all you had, you gave To save mankind, yourselves you scorned to save. Those lovely lines were written by Sir John Stanhope Arkwright and presumably published in his collection of poems, "The Supreme Sacrifice," in 1919. We shall be singing them to a haunting tune on ...
This isn't a relationship advice blog. But my wife and I are approaching our 24th wedding anniversary next month and we're still talking to each other. So, in the spirit of being intentional in all aspects of my life, I've spent some time reflecting on what I've learned about marriage and relationships. Firstly, a marriage is a process that requires ongoing attention. It's not just a case of get the certificate and you're all set. A marriage, like any relationship, needs to be nurtured if it is to thrive. Neglect it and it'll wither and die. Just because you're in ...
One of the highlights of last week came on Friday when Wera Hobhouse's Bill to tackle workplace sexual harassment cleared its final legislative process. It will become law when it receives Royal Assent. From the Lib Dem website: Harassment in the workplace is a blight on society. It is widespread, it ruins lives and impacts effective working relationships in all walks of life. Not a week goes by without revelations of inappropriate behaviour in an organisation somewhere in the UK. The Bill makes employers liable to their employees if they have not taken reasonable steps to prevent harassment. Shocking figures ...
Anybody who might be wondering why it is taking so long for the Westminister government to ban 'no-fault' evictions in England need look no further than this article in the Mirror. The paper says that Tory landlords have laid into sweeping housing reforms which would end no-fault evictions responsible for driving tens of thousands of tenants out of their homes: The Government sparked anger when it caved into pressure from Conservative MPs and lobbyists and delayed scrapping controversial Section 21 evictions, to the delight of wealthy property owners. In a fraught debate in the Commons, Tories with extensive portfolios demanded ...
Given that half the panel had been up all night doing by-election media, it was pretty incredible that they were still going strong into the evening to do Any Questions. At around midnight, Christine Jardine was the first to say publicly that Labour had won Mid Beds even if she did get John Curtice and John Spencer (Leo McGarry from The West Wing) mixed up i her comments. At 8 pm, she, Tory Minister Andrew Bowie, Dame Jackie Baillie from Labour, Pete Wishart from the SNP and Blair Jenkins, former Chief Executive of Yes Scotland, the campaign for Scottish independence, ...
