The Joy of Six 1169

Matthew Pennell explains where HS2 went wrong: "his is the hallmark of populism - a complete failure to deliver, a lot of posturing and constant drama about things under your nose, with no capability to do anything strategic." Nick Winch pays tribute to his mother Phoebe Winch, who died last week at the age of 92: "She was a member of the Standing committee of ALC then ALDC - and was the organisation's first President. She would travel around the country with the likes of Roger Hayes and Andrew Stunell running training days for councillors and campaigners, wrote ALC booklets ...

At last some good news. The Leicester Mercury reports: A pub in an idyllic village near Market Harborough which shut during the pandemic is preparing to reopen under new management. The Bell, in Main Street, East Langton, will be welcoming customers again from this Friday, October 13. The pub, which dates back to the 17th Century, has been taken over by Neil and Steph Price who also run The George at Ashley. While scholars agree that the model for Bonkers Hall is Nevill Holt Hall near Medbourne, East Langton is most often cited as the inspiration for the village to ...

Difficult dogs off a lead and dog fouling are persistent problems. Dog fouling is a particular issue at this time of year with the dark nights. Shropshire Council is planning to crack down on this anti-social behaviour. The council is planning to apply for a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) covering the entire county. This extends a current order and provides for better enforcement. This is a welcome move though those that walk their dog off lead many not be so happy. The bizarre part of the proposed order, is that it will prohibit dog fouling in a public space. ...

Phoebe Winch 1931-2023

There may be some LDV readers with elephantine memories who can recall Phoebe Winch who died last week in Bristol aged 92. Described by Tony Greaves as "an outstanding community politician" she joined the Liberal Party in the early 1960s after attending a Jo Grimond meeting and served the inevitable apprenticeship as membership secretary in a (then) derelict Surrey seat. In 1966 she moved to Dorset and started campaigning on local issues - rural bus subsidies and the like - and then led a successful campaign to stop Sherborne being moved from Dorset into Somerset under the proposals for local ...

Those were the opening words of a powerful speech by Ed Davey at the Vigil outside 10 Downing Street on Monday evening following the Hamas attack on Israel. Ed was there representing our Party with Daisy Cooper. Ed went on to say: The Liberal Democrats stand in solidarity and support tonight with Jewish people across the world and we stand in support and solidarity with the amazing Jewish community in Great Britain. And I stand in support together tonight with Tom, with Robert, with David [other speakers]. Let them hear this, the government and the opposition stand in solidarity with ...

Gagging the victims

The Independent reports that police have used hundreds of gagging orders to silence victims of misogyny, amid concerns forces are trying to "sweep the issue under the carpet". The paper says that new figures reveal forces in England and Wales have imposed 243 non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) or other types of gagging orders, to stop staff from talking about their treatment following employment tribunal claims, in the past five years. More than half of these, a total of 133 were issued by the Metropolita Police: The figures, obtained under Freedom of Information laws by the Police Federation of England and Wales ...
