Embed from Getty ImagesThe Tory worldview holds that private schools care about high standards while teachers in the state sector want all to have prizes whether they have earned them or not. A point picked up in a Lib Dem Voice article by my fellow graduate of the Philosophy department at York, Mary Reid, proves that this is the opposite of the truth: As it happens, Universities were aware that grades would be returning to "normal" this year so adjusted their offers accordingly, which should mean that the transition to Higher Education will be smooth for most students. In fact, ...
There were just 2 principal council by-elections this week. However there was still much to celebrate with a fantastic hold in St Albans and a significant move forward in a previously safe Labour ward in Middlesborough. First of all we would like to congratulate Councillor Raihaanah Ahmed and St Albans Lib Dems for a great hold in Marshalwick East & Jersey Farm ward - and in a crowded field getting almost half the vote. Well done on a fantastic result. St Albans DC, Marhsalwick East & Jersey Farm Liberal Democrats (Raihaanah Ahmed): 774 (46%, -3.8%) Conservative: 661 (39.3%, +5.3%) Green ...

I'm not a football fan, but even I watched the Lionesses win their semi-final on Wednesday morning. And I will be glued to the television on Sunday from 11am. What a treat for England, and indeed for the whole country! Of course, many people love watching big matches in the friendly atmosphere of their local, and that also helps the local economy. Unfortunately, the timing on Sunday is awkward to say the least, because most pubs won't be able to sell alcohol until 11am at the earliest, or even 12pm, according to their current licence. Which is why the Lib ...
When I posted a USAAF aerial photograph of Market Harborough during the war, I noted the large oval in Welland Park and asked if it was a long-vanished cycle track. The answer to my question is yes. There was a cinder track laid out in the park and both runners and cyclists has plans for it, but they appear to have come to nothing. Here's the Market Harborough Advertiser and Midland Mail for 9 February 1934 reporting on a meeting of the urban district council: The Welland Park Scheme The Clerk said the Surveyor and he attended the Ministry and ...
It is getting to the point now when Labour have performed so many policy u-turns that they must be getting dizzy. The Independent details the latest, with ac claim that the party has reportedly watered down its plans to strengthen rights for gig economy and precariously employed workers in a bid to woo business leaders. The paper says that the opposition's National Policy Forum last month agreed a series of changes to the Labour programme as Keir Starmer's team firms up their policies ahead of an expected general election next year: In 2021 Sir Keir's party pledged to create a ...
Students who got their A Level, BTEC or T level results yesterday have had a tough few years. They took their GCSES in 2021 after 18 months of major disruption to their studies. That then had an impact on their choices at 16 and their ability to benefit from the next stage. This has all been well understood by their teachers, by exam boards and by universities. We should celebrate the students' resilience and tenacity, and the ingenuity of the teachers who have been working through some very serious challenges. Some of the headlines in the press have been rather ...
