The Joy of Six 1153

Mathew Pennell looks at the new Liberal Democrat policy document on housing: "I have a vision for housing, I hope it's based on the most important aspects of the housing crisis - housing is unaffordable, the UK is lopsided when it comes to homes, jobs, opportunities, infrastructure, a lot of social housing is in a terrible state, a lot of new build housing is signed off despite bad planning and placemaking." John Oxley has good news for Liberal England readers: the Conservatives are heading for electoral evisceration. "The marks of restraint are clear on the child's arm, the bruises that ...

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI (the firm behind ChatGPT), has warned of the potential impact of artificial intelligence on political campaigning: i am nervous about the impact AI is going to have on future elections (at least until everyone gets used to it). personalized 1:1 persuasion, combined with high-quality generated media, is going to be a powerful force. — Sam Altman (@sama) August 3, 2023

The latest edition of my weekly political polling round-up, The Week in Polls, is out. As it says: In the previous The Week in Polls I touched on how risky it is to think of those who answer voting intention questions from pollsters with 'don't know' as an easy route back to popularity for the Conservatives. Just because many of them voted Conservative in 2019 doesn't mean they'll be relatively easy for the government to win back. Now some new data about undecided voters from Redfield & Wilton reinforces that point. Find out more by reading this edition of The ...

As commemorative weeks go, it's been a bad one for Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman. They waited all year for Small Boats Week only to have it spoiled by Leftie Lawyers, so-called fire safety 'experts' and an outbreak of lethal bacteria. On top of that, they suddenly had half the country shouting at them about human rights, compassion and other foreign ideas after six people drowned in the Channel. Never mind that they had done what their base wanted and blocked safe passages for refugees, given the French state-of-the-art kit to harass the migrants and even bought the immigrants a ...

A new report from Chatham House, How to end Russia's war on Ukraine, concludes that the only outcome to the war that will safeguard the future security of Europe is a convincing Ukrainian victory. You can download the report from the Chatham House website, which says: As Ukraine continues to fight to liberate its occupied territories and eject Russian invaders, its Western backers debate the likely endgame for the war and its aftermath. The international response to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, while impressive in many ways, remains inadequate to the task and dangerously wobbly. Russia's wider threat to the ...

It has been sometime since a UK Prime Minister so ostentatiously and publicly enjoyed the trappings of office to the extent that he didn't appear to care what others thought about his behaviour. Rishi Sunak, however, appears to have reached that point in his career. The Independent reports that the Prime Minister has taken a taxpayer-funded private flight for travel in the UK once every eight days since he has been at No 10. The paper says that the data reveals that Sunak has already used RAF jets and helicopters for domestic journeys more frequently than any recent PM - ...

The newspapers seem to be full of stories either questioning what future the Conservative Party has given the prospect of a solid thrashing at some point in the next fifteen months or so or bemoaning what it might do in the time it has left. It does require a sense of manic optimism to believe that a government which appears to have given up on addressing the issues that actually matter to the public can actually turn things around. And yet, the public mood is fickle. It isn't that long ago that the Conservatives were leading in the polls fairly ...
