Click on Millais's painting of the princes to listen to Matt Lewis's Gone Medieval podcast on their fate. If you want a clue to the line he takes, he is the author of The Survival of the Princes in the Tower: The murder of the Princes in the Tower is the most famous cold case in British history. Traditionally considered victims of a ruthless uncle, there are other suspects too often and too easily discounted. There may be no definitive answer, but by delving into the context of their disappearance and the characters of the suspects Matthew Lewis examines the ...

Tim Farron isn't the only Liberal Democrat MP supporting a local railway reopening. Helen Morgan is backing the return of trains to the Gobowen to Oswestry Line.in her North Shropshire constituency. She told the Border Counties Advertizer: "There are few towns the size of Oswestry with such poor public transport links. "Despite the obvious rail heritage you see around town, Oswestry Railway Station has not been open since 1966." An outline business case for reopening the link to Gobowen have been with the government for over a year, and Helen said: "I've already been in touch with the Secretary of ...

Concert and Blues

Tallinn is full tonight... Big concerts on at the Song field The Weeknd and Bonnie Tyler (!). The place is buzzing and some sixty thousand concert goers have booked every bed for thirty miles around Tallinn. It should be a busy high summer, but it isn´t.Tourism is down sharply overall. Only 70 cruise ships calling this season, versus over 300 before Ukraine. Since no one goes to St Pete, demand has fallen, and of course people think that Estonia is not safe.We are tired. The economy is still under big pressure, and the fall of tourism is a significant part ...

As most of you will know, I have been on light council duties for a couple of months. I'm still dealing with urgent matters. Sewerage spills. Homelessness. And attending planning meetings and more. But after nearly a decade as a councillor I decided I need a break. Always in the back of mind was a plan to write a couple of books centred on the Dukes and Duchesses of Buckingham and Chandos. History books. About the people, not the events of the Georgian era about which so much has been written. Of course, the events of the day feature. Politics, ...

There is a total absence of holistic joined up thinking on the emotive topic of immigration. The solution does not lie simply in quotas, walls, barbed wire, African exile, indecipherable application forms or even hunting down people traffickers. It needs to be recognised that the human souls washing up on the shores of the developed world did not materialise out of the ether. And furthermore, that demographic realities dictate that immigration is not an unalloyed evil. But politicians – especially the more populist variety – prefer to pander to an electorate which has been fed a diet of fear of ...

A tragi-comedy of errors

If it wasn't so tragic, the recent developments in the Tory grand plan to deal with asylum seekers would be funny, though only in an ironic way. The Guardian reports that the culmination of Rishi Sunak's "small boats week", which was supposed to announce new hardline policies to reduce the number of asylum seekers attempting to enter the UK, saw Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, under pressure to abandon plans to house asylum seekers on a barge, after 39 people had to be removed from the vessel after the discovery of potentially deadly bacteria in the water system: Home Office sources ...
