In July 2012 I went to a recital in St Laurence's. Church Stretton, that was part of the town's arts festival. One of the pieces I heard played was Fauré's Sicilienne, and I blogged the same day: I am sure that it was used as the theme music for a detective series many years ago - probably one set in the Victorian era. However, no amount of searching will tell me what the series was. I have solved the mystery. If I'm right then it wasn't the them of a detective series set in the 19th century but of a ...

The Joy of Six 1152

Joe Norris looks at the invaluable work of the Young Liberals in May's local elections and their success in getting their members elected to councils. "I ask whether a Starmer-fronted supermajority would be good for standards in Westminster; it comes after one recent poll showed Labour could have as many as 460 seats after the next election. It prompts Bryant's longest pause of the interview. I sense he may be torn between his instincts as parliamentary policeman and party politician." Josh Self interviews Chris Bryant about his new book Code of Conduct. Colin Bradley argues that John Rawls' work shows ...

There is going to be a Parliamentary by-election in Rutherglen and Hamilton West following the recall of the SNP MP Margaret Ferrier. You may remember that she was suspended from the House of Commons over a serious breach of Covid regulations in 2020. It will be a fairly clear fight between SNP and Labour, but as always it is very important that we field a credible candidate. The local party has selected Gloria Adebo, who lives in Rutherglen with her family. Gloria was originally from Nigeria; she stood as a council candidate for Rutherglen Central and North in 2022 and ...

There were 3 principal council by-elections this week. It was great to see a Lib Dem candidate standing in all of them. We also had an excellent gain to celebrate in Somerset which is where we start. Congratulations to Cllr Kevin Messenger who gained Castle Cary ward on Somerset Council from the Conservatives - with over 50% of the vote, a very healthy majority of over 600 and a 10.4% increase in vote share! Well done to Kevin and everyone in Somerset and thank you for keeping the Lib Dem momentum going. That's 4 by-election gains in the space of ...

The meaning of money

Money has been around longer than writing, so it's difficult to know for sure when, why and how the idea of money first came into being. But whoever came up with it, whether it was the Mesopotamians with their shekels or the native Africans with their cowrie shells, I'm pretty sure they didn't know what they were getting us all into. Because money has become much more than simply a convenient medium of exchange for goods or services. It has become a way of assigning value to the things around us, from the houses that we live in to the ...

Wilko worries

We have 2 Wilko stores in Gateshead, one at the Interchange, the other at the Metrocentre. Both are substantial in size and lots of residents work in them. The announcement yesterday that Wilko have gone into administration is worrying for both the staff and the local economy. Let's hope the company is able to find a buyer though that does not guarantee stores will remain open.Wilko's store is

So here we are in the 8th month of the doctors' dispute with the Conservative government for pay restoration of 35% to repair salary losses over the past decade plus. We are not talking about a pay increase just restoration, not unreasonable. How did this happen? – well, in short, because doctors are excluded from any of the pay awards made to other NHS staff because doctors pay is the remit of a so-called independent pay review body which takes care of doctors (and dentists) pay, except it doesn't, and when it finally made a recommendation, the government deemed it ...

London Liberal Democrats have announced that Rob Blackie will be our candidate in the Mayoral elections next year. Congratulations to Rob! OK, so not quite the usual photo for a serious candidate, but we loved this photo of Rob with Hina Bokhari, London Assembly member. They had been Wombling on Wimbledon Common. Rob grew up in Pimlico and now lives near Brixton in South London and runs his own business as an adviser to start-up tech companies. Rob has been a life-long Lib Dem who served as Charles Kennedy's Director of Research during the Iraq War. Since then he has ...

The Independent reports that Energy secretary Grant Shapps has warned senior Conservatives pushing for Rishi Sunak to ditch green policies that the government's net zero pledge remains vital. The paper says that Shapps has pointed out that the global climate crisis poses a threat to Britain's security and energy supply, countering Tory MPs who are calling for No 10 to scrap measures deemed too costly: "We can't have global security without net zero," Mr Shapps told Politico. "There's no global security if millions of people are having to uproot because of weather patterns." He also unveiled plans for the UK ...
