There are rumours tonight that bookies are already paying out on Headline of the Year, but this effort has at least won BBC News our Headline of the Day Award. Now read about the death of Harold Davidson, the Vicar of Stiffkey.
The Financial Times reports news of a possible push to force Nadine Dorries to live up to her promise to stand down from Parliament: Labour MP Sir Chris Bryant told the Financial Times he wanted to see the restoration of a parliamentary rule from 1801 stating that "no member do presume to go out of town without leave of this House" ... The MP for Mid Bedfordshire and former culture secretary has angered opposition MPs and some fellow Tories by remaining in post since she announced on June 9 that she would step down "with immediate effect"... According to House ...
From Helen Morgan's local newspaper, the Shropshire Star, comes this letter of complaint from a member of the public about the MP.
Arts Fresco, the biggest free arts festival in the Midlands, returns to Market Harborough on Sunday 10 September. You can read about some of the acts who'll be appearing over on the Arts Fresco website. This is my favourite public event of the year in Harborough. It's suffered a difficult few years because of the Covid pandemic, and last year had to find a new date at short notice because of the death of the Queen. But all looks set for 10 September.
Writing in the Herald, Kathleen Nutt says the Liberal Democrats is seeking to take back Charles Kennedy's old seat of Ross, Skye and Lochaber. Kennedy lost the seat to the SNP's Ian Blackford in 2015 after a bitter local campaign. Blackford has recently announced he will be standing down as an MP at the next election. Lib Dem ambitions are boosted by the strength of the candidate they have in place, the prominent entrepreneur and local councillor Angus MacDonald: The businessman opened Fort William's first cinema in 15 as a gift to his home town and also runs a bookstore ...
I visited Uppingham - Rutland's second city - on Thursday. When I came to file away the photos I had taken, I was surprised to find I was last in the town in December 2016. Because Uppingham used to be a town of second-hand bookshops, with the result that I went there regularly. On Thursday I found none of them still trading. The photograph above shows Don Paddy's, a wine bar and coffee house on the Market Place. But I can remember when the first floor of the building was occupied by a bookshop. And if you doubt me, a ...

Donald Trump will get his wish. He desperately tried to air his election fraud claim in court. He made over 50 attempts to do so, including two to bring it before the Supreme Court. But Trump's problem is that the wrong person - or entity – is charged with lying. It is not the swamp, deep state, establishment elite or the blob that is being hauled before the court accused of porky pies in pursuit of naked power. It is Donald Trump. The cornerstone of the case of Special Counsel Jack Smith and the Department of Justice is that Donald ...
Unelected thinktanks have a disproportionate influence on government, especially this Tory government, so it is important for there to be complete transparency as to how they are funded and who they speak to. Alas neither of these is true. That is apparent from this worrying article in the Guardian, which reports that some of Britain's most influential thinktanks received more than $1m (£787,000) from donations in the US in 2021. The paper says that the recipients of this money include the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), regarded as an inspiration for policies adopted by the Liz Truss government, and Policy ...

From the Curator of Museum Services, University of Dundee : Our new exhibition in the Tower Foyer Gallery is now open. 'Still Moving - Capturing Motion in Art and Science' will be on display until 30th September and is open Monday to Saturday. The world is constantly in motion around us. One of the challenges for both artists and scientists is how to capture movement in order to understand and express it, whether through still images or sets of data. This exhibition explores some of the ways that motion has been captured in time both in art and science. All ...
