Still sounding like a minor character from Poldark. Jago Hazzard looks at an abortive Tube scheme of the 1930s. Parts of it, he argues, have been built in the years since.

Huw - what a surprise!

For most of the past week our media, both print and broadcast, our politicians, and, I suspect, most of the public have obsessed (there's no other word) over the case of the "as yet unidentified" BBC presenter and the alleged £35 000 he paid a young man for "explicit" pictures of himself. None of those involved have come out with reputations unblemished. The allegations, carefully crafted to suggest something illegal as well as immoral and inappropriate, first appeared in the "Sun" newspaper, which for years boosted its circulation by exhibiting (fairly) explicit pictures (upper, not lower) of teenage girls which ...

This week saw 4 principal council by-elections. There were Lib Dem candidates in all 4 which is a really good benchmark to hit. In all elections the Lib Dem share of the vote moved forwards. We also celebrated some very impressive gains in Town Council by-elections in Melksham and Chippenham. Congratulations to the local teams there. Two by-elections took place in Newham LBC. Thank you to David Terrar (Boleyn ward) and Claire Pattie (Well End ward) for making sure there was a Lib Dem choice on the ballot paper. The Lib Dems had not contested the last election in both ...

The Joy of Six 1145

"The self-styled free market task force seems to be yet another dark money outfit in British politics - led by senior figures from US and UK free market think tanks who have been funded by fossil fuels, the Koch Brothers, climate change deniers, the tobacco industry and much more." Peter Geoghegan looks behind the scenes of Liz Truss's new 'growth commission'. Anny Shaw and Hannah McGivern find that funding cuts and a weak economy have sent Britain's visual arts into crisis. "For six decades, To Kill a Mockingbird has been taught with the comfort (and power) of white students (and ...

A leftist divorce

On February 26th, 2023, Labour MP John McDonnell addressed rumours that there was a split within the left after a difference of opinion between himself and former Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn on whether Ukraine should be armed to fight back against the russian invasion. McDonnell denied this, claiming "an honest difference of opinion". And what a difference; either provide firepower to a population facing a fascist invasion or choose neutrality and encourage the invaded country to accept annexation, deportation and genocide. A breeding ground for division in the left is foreign policy. Most notably since the formation of the Stop ...
