Embed from Getty ImagesCongratulations to Bridget Smith, the Liberal Democrat leader of South Cambridgeshire District Council, for standing up to the government over the authority's trial of a four-day working week. BBC News reports that last week the local government minister Lee Rowley wrote to the district council calling for the trial to stop and expressed concern about its impact on local taxpayers. He said the council's approach could breach its legal duties under the Local Government Act, and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities would "shortly be issuing clear guidance". But the council is not stopping the ...

The Daily Mirror reports: The Lib Dems are bringing forward a "Block Bailey Bill" to prevent him from taking his seat in the House of Lords after he was awarded entry in Boris Johnson's controversial resignation honours. The Lib Dems are calling for Mr Sunak to "govern with integrity" and block his peerage. Sign up to get ...

Which may explain why, in The Old Curiosity Shop, Little Nell and her grandfather travel by canal for a short stretch of their flight into Shropshire:A confused sound of voices, mingling with her dreams, awoke her. A man of very uncouth and rough appearance was standing over them, and two of his companions were looking on, from ...

Don't grow old!

When I was a lot younger I remember older people telling me not to grow old. Thanks to the NHS and better nutrition most of us live longer lives than our grandparents or great grandparents did, but greater age brings more health problems. At 78 I already consume a handful of pills morning and night, and tend to take a lift rather than use the stairs. I have a marked reduction in energy to do normal everyday things and often need a nap during the day. In spite of those constraints I am still actively involved in my local party ...

The Guardian reports that non-native species from Japanese knotweed to a fungus that kills ash trees is now costing the UK economy about £4bn a year, up from £1.7bn in 2010. The paper says that there are about 2,000 invasive non-native species (Inns) in the UK, and about 12 new ones establish themselves each year, adding, along with inflation, to the rise in costs: The economic impact is laid out in a study funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, with the ash tree-killing fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, also known as ash dieback, the most economically damaging species ...

These days Talking Pictures TV is the place to go for videos like this, but I used to post them quite regularly. So let's put a toe in the water again. There's nothing spectacular here - no trains running along the quay at Weymouth, for instance - and the colour is washed out, but there are plenty of small points to enjoy. You may want to turn the music down though.
