Peter Doveston says liberals should reframe the transport debate by talking about the way public transport can offer freedom from the burden of car ownership. Here is a quotation from the concluding chapter of Not thinking like a Liberal by Raymond Geuss: Liberalism, in the sense I have been using it, is committed to the inviolability of individual taste and opinion, the need to protect maximum unfettered choice, and free enterprise. Anyone who, in our world, can see a viable path from this conception to a situation where we avoid ecological disaster has much sharper vision than mine. I came ...

Anyone who knows me knows that I am one of those who loves reading and analysing everything to death after. This makes me a somewhat useful yet, sometimes, annoying tutor. This skill suited me well when I was in the market intelligence and industry analysis world, but, that is another story I will tell another day. Recently, I tutored a Hong Kong student who migrated with his family to the UK in 2021. He was undergoing his GCSEs and I was helping him with English Literature. One book that stood out to me, which I explored with him was "An ...

This morning Twitter is working normally on my PC, but when I try to use the app on my phone it's a disaster area. My conclusion is that Twitter has major technical problems and Elon Musk's announcement about rate limits was a calculated move to distract us from them. It seems to have distracted the media too, as journalists continue to report Musk's remarks at face value and neglect to ask what is really happening with Twitter. Here is an honourable exception. I don't want to be one of those people who believes that everything in the news is there ...

Despite the outrage from the England players, the Lord's crowd and MCC members in the Long Room, the dismissal of Jonny Bairstow was perfectly fair. Alex Carey, the Australian wicket keeper, had noticed that Bairstow has a habit of wandering out of his ground when the ball has passed him. His stumping was effected by taking the ball and throwing it at the stumps in one movement. In fact Bairstow was still in his ground as Carey threw the ball and obligingly wandered out of it while the ball travelled towards his stumps. Most of the criticism of Carey's actions ...

The Mirror reports that a gang of Tory MPs is trying to force Rishi Sunak to stop foreign staff taking jobs in care homes - despite a huge number of vacancies. The paper says that the New Conservatives Group on Monday will demand the struggling PM adopt their extreme plan for immigration: The MPs, led by Tom Hunt, are angry that he has failed to deliver on the 2019 Conservative manifesto pledge to slash the numbers of people arriving in this country. Net immigration stood at 226,000 when Boris Johnson made the promise, but it has risen to an all ...

As an admirer of Karl Popper I've been pleased to see him getting renewed attention, even if this ubiquitous graphic gives an inadequate account of his views on tolerance. It's been less of a pleasure to see his name co-opted by those on the left who want to censor the expression of opinion. This is the precise opposite of what Popper argued for in his work. And this in turn has led to his becoming something of a hate figure for the no-nothing right. An example: Nobody even knows who karl popper is but his 70-iq take on "tolerance" reeks ...
