Tonight Somerton and Frome MP David Warburton announced his intention to resign from Parliament and cause the 4th pending by-election of this Summer Somerton and Frome was, of course, held by Lib Dem David Heath from 1997-2015. Speaking after David Warburton's announcement this evening our Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper said: The Conservatives have dragged our country through the gutter and taken people for granted. There is no better example of that than in Somerton and Frome. Time after time the Conservatives have mired themselves in sleaze and scandal neglecting the issues that really matter to people. Then they decided it ...

Delivering Focus leaflets in my ward of Whickham South and Sunniside over the past week has reminded me how leaflets were delivered in Greek general elections some decades ago. It was my first trip abroad and David and I were in Crete for 2 week. There was a general election on at the same time so we went along to one of the centre/centre left rallies and watched as people sang the campaign
It is always good to see new businesses setting up on Sunniside Front Street. So welcome Clinic 12 who recently took over the former Sunniside Post Office.
Congratulations to a pair of councillors, Prue Bray and Heather Kidd, who feature in King Charles's first birthday honours list: I am so thrilled that @PrueBray is to be awarded an MBE. Prue has always gone above and beyond for the Liberal Democrats and for her community in Winnersh. She has dedicated herself to voluntary service with little recognition or personal benefit herself. — Ed Davey (@EdwardJDavey) June 17, 2023
It has been a bad week for populists. Boris Johnson out of Parliament. Donald Trump arraigned on espionage charges and Italy's Silvio Berlusconi buried. But it has also been a bad 21st century for the anti-populists. Trump elected and threatening to return. Brexit, Johnson and Truss in the UK. Viktor Orban in Hungary. Putin in Russia. Bolsonaro in Brazil. Modi in India.... Electorate after electorate has fallen victim to a string of self-serving narcissists prepared to exploit irrational fears, issue empty promises and bend, ignore or break the law in blatant pursuit of power and self-interest. Silvio Bunga Bunga Berlusconi ...

North of Leicester the River Soar is joined by the River Wreake. The Wreake used to be navigable as far as Melton Mowbray, where there was a basin beside the railway station. From there a canal ran to another basin close to the centre of Oakham. The Queen Elizabeth Theatre of Oakham School is housed in an old warehouse that stood beside that basin. I managed to get a couple of photographs of it on Saturday, though the theatre is now surrounded by other school buildings. That was five years ago. Today I was in Oakham again, hunting for the ...
