The Bill will give an estimated 2.4 million carers across the UK a statutory right to take five days of unpaid leave per year, helping carers to better balance work and care.Introduced by Wendy Chamberlain MP, and steered through the House of Lords by Liberal Democrat Peer Lord Fox, the Carer's Leave Bill has been described by the charity Carers UK as a 'landmark' piece of legislation. This is a fantastic step forward in our continued campaigning to stand up for the rights of carers. "Unpaid carers are the backbone of our society. Yet far too many go without adequate support ...

I was down in London to see some Liberator friends yesterday, and took the chance to visit Chess and Bridge in Baker Street. (Yes, I'm getting hooked on chess again.) After that I explored Marylebone and, because I've never thought of it as a poor area, was surprised to come across nine blocks of 19th-century "improved dwellings". These were early essays in social housing, provided in slum areas of London. And West of Marylebone High Street, a draft chapter of University College London's survey of South East Marylebone, tells me all about them: Most of the Grotto Passage area was ...

When the date of the Coronation was announced some of us were concerned about the impact it might have on the local elections in England – in terms of campaigning and turnout. In the event it didn't seem to have much effect, but they took the concern seriously in Northern Ireland which is why their local council elections took place yesterday. There was no overnight counting and results are beginning to trickle in. Of course, the political landscape is rather different in Northern Ireland from England, but as Lib Dems we are watching the performance of our sister party, the ...

The video of a recent British Film Institute event with Alan Bennett has appeared on YouTube. So far I've watched just the first few minutes, but it was enough to give me my Trivial Fact of the Day. Play the clip above to hear it.

Following an excellent interview in the Guardian on Tuesday, Ed Davey has now made an impressive appearance on the BBC Newscast. It starts about 5minutes 30 seconds in. He talks about the G7 summit and the local elections, but the main topic of discussion is sewage. He says that bill-payers should not be paying for the errors of the water companies, and that some of the practices were illegal anyway and they have not been meeting their legal obligations. Ed is asked how the Lib Dems can turn the local election surge into success at the next General Election. He ...

The Independent carries an interesting article on the American influence on the National Conservatism Conference. They say that when Suella Braverman delivered a half-hour-long speech railing against "identity politics" and "radical gender ideology" on Monday, it was the first time most people had heard of the National Conservatism Conference: The conference was run by an American group that professes to be concerned for "Western civilization" in the face of supposed enemies, including "radical forms of sexual licence" and the loss of "traditional family", where relationships should be between men and women. It is the project of a think tank called ...

As residents will know, some time ago, the bus service 17 route was changed which took the bus away from its original route that included Lochee Road, Tullideph Road and Ancrum Road. In the Ancrum Road and Tullideph Road area, access to buses has sharply reduced as a result with just the off-peak 6 and 204 services serving parts of the area. The 6 does not operate at weekends and the 204 not on Sundays. The situation will deteriorate further in 2024 as the SNP administration on the City Council pushed through at this year's budget a full cut to ...

Ed Davey's Guardian interview with Zoe Williams created quite a stir. If you've not read it yet, it will repay your time. It also features in our Letter of the Day, which comes from today's edition of that paper: Zoe Williams' interview with Ed Davey had a most unusual impact on me: I finished reading it and joined the Lib Dems.
