We have been concerned about the time people in Ludlow have to wait for an ambulance for a long while. Data from the winter just ended show that the wait for an emergency ambulance here is still lengthy and target response times are far from being met. If someone has a life threatening condition such as heart attack or respiratory failure, nine of ten can expect to wait up to 39 minutes for an ambulance. The national response target is 15 minutes. For a stroke or chest pains, the wait is up to two and a half hours against a ...

There are 34 members of Harborough District Council, spread across 25 wards, and the Liberal Democrats are fielding a full slate of 34 candidates in next month's elections. This is a remarkable achievement, and one we have never become particularly close to before, even in the days when we ran the council with a minority administration. The number of candidates standing for each party is as follows: 34 - Liberal Democrats31 - Conservatives30 - Greens25 - Labour2 - Independent1 - Reform UK The current political balance of the council is: Conservatives 22, Liberal Democrats 11, Labour 1.

I've often written about the importance of standing more Liberal Democrat local election candidates, and this time around the whole party has made a big push to improve matters. That push has paid off: @markpack Good +7 surge for Lib Dems! — Cllr Michael Carthew [IMG: 🔶] [IMG: 🏳️‍🌈] (@Olton_Mike) April 5, 2023

How do Liberal Democrats get our message across to the wider public? When I was briefly the party's assistant press officer, over half a century ago, the answer was fairly straightforward. There were mass-circulation newspapers, with a range of political perspectives, which welcomed stories and Op-Eds; there was also a thriving regional and local press. And there was the BBC, stolid and serious, to hold the national debate together. I pride myself that the largest audience I have ever reached was when I wrote an Op-Ed for the News of the World for Jo Grimond: its circulation then was over ...

Where are the women?

Earlier this week the Fawcett Society published a report on the gender balance on Councils across the UK. The headline story is that only 36% of elected councillors are women. In only 5% of Councils were at least half of the councillors female. It gets worse. You might imagine that Lib Dems would be ahead of the other parties on this, but tucked away in the report is the embarrassing fact that only 35% of our councillors are women – a figure below that achieved by five other parties and only higher than the Conservatives and some Northern Ireland parties. ...

The Tories and their supportive press are hailing Nigel Lawson, who was Chancellor of the Exchequer under Margaret Thatcher, as a heroic figure whose economic policies rescued Britain from being an overtaxed, overregulated, bloated state into a roaring economic success. It is true that Lawson was a conviction politician who overturned the Keynesian policies which had become conventional in the post war period into what became known as the Washington Consensus of small states, low taxation, privatisation and deregulation. This he believed would lead to dynamic prosperity. Unfortunately, as we are now experiencing, his convictions were wrong. On taxation he ...

'Prominent' crosses installed on Shropshire hill to send powerful Easter message So says the headline in the Shropshire Star over this story:Three gigantic Christian crosses are sending a powerful Easter message from the top of a Shropshire landmark. For the second year running St Margaret's Church, in Ratlinghope, has organised to get the 15ft and 10ft crosses planted as a beacon on top of Ratchup Hill. They are visible for many miles around and will be the focus of Easter services at the church. Mike Barnbrook, speaking on behalf of the church team, said: "They are very visible and can ...

Yesterday's welcome accession of Finland to NATO membership reminded me of an incident last year, on the eve of the Putin invasion of Ukraine. While most of us in the West supported NATO's warnings to Russia that an aggressive attack was not acceptable, some within the political establishment were not so warm towards Ukraine. 11 Labour MPs signed a letter by the leftwing group "Stop the War"

Jonathan (JPB) talks with Merlene Emerson of the Chinese Liberal Democrats (CLD) CLD: Please tell us a bit about yourself and how you developed your interest in Taiwan? JPB: I joined the Liberal Democrats in 2004. I would have been a member of an Alliance party from 1983/84 but I was brought up as a Jehovah's Witness, and the group forbids political involvement. I have been an active member of my branch since then, running as a ward candidate a number of times. As well as Taiwan I am passionate about Europe being a core member of the cross-party campaign ...

Who's paying our MPs?

The Guardian says that a report from the House of Commons standards committee has called on MPs to be banned from using foreign governments to fund parliamentary "special interest" groups, as part of a crackdown on the influence of potentially hostile states in parliament. The paper adds that at least two Gulf countries are said to have financially supported All Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs), while fears have been raised for years among security officials about the opaque nature of how the networks operate: The Commons and Lords speakers are particularly concerned about the influence of foreign governments among APPGs, and ...
