The Joy of Six 1121

"Talented Tory politicians are no longer gossiped about as potentially the next Prime Minister, but as the next Leader of the Opposition. Others are standing down early rather than go through the motions of waiting for voters to kick them out." Asa Bennett says the real battle for the future of the Conservative Party will begin when they have lost the next election. Michael Walzer talks to Dissent about his new book The Struggle for a Decent Politics: "A liberal is someone who's tolerant of ambiguity, who can join arguments that he doesn't have to win, who can live with ...

It was lovely catching up again with many members in person at our York conference and thank you to everyone who safely voted through the proposals the Board put to conference, including our new Code of Conduct and improvements to our constitution. Winning more power Presenting the Board report, I talked about how, as we enter the final phase of this Parliament, there are two overriding aims for the Liberal Democrats: win more council seats and elect more MPs. We'll best do this by concentrating on the issues that matter most to voters. But by doing this we will also ...

The Liberal Democrat local election campaign launch was very much not a low key affair. The Conservative one, however, was another matter: The Tory Party did not invite national media to the launch amid warnings they risk losing more than 1,000 council seats when voters head to the polls on 4 May... The Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper also told The Mirror: "Announcing their election campaign with but a whisper is a pretty telltale sign of how the Conservatives are feeling about May's local elections. "Rishi Sunak would be right to keep quiet about the Conservatives electoral prospects this ...

Lib Dems are doing very well at Prime Minister's Questions at the moment. Yesterday, we had two questions to Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab in Rishi Sunak's absence. First up, Sarah Olney carried through the theme of the day – GP shortages, highlighting the impact: "What does the Deputy Prime Minister say to those patients left in pain and staff left in tears due to this government's failed promise to recruit more GPs?" Regrets, we've had a few

The Independent reports on an interesting poll that shows that the British public has more confidence in the EU than the UK parliament. The paper says that confidence in the Westminster parliament has plummeted 10 points to just 22 per cent since the Brexit referendum, and that although the popularity of the EU has lagged behind parliament among Britons since the early 1980s, confidence in Brussels has shot up seven points to 39 per cent since Brexit: The findings came from analysis of more than 20 countries by the Policy Institute at King's College London (KCL) as part of the ...

Alex Cole-Hamilton's speech to Holyrood when he stood for First Minister on Tuesday is below. He knew he would lose, obviously, with only 4 MSPs. However a Birgitte Nyborg moment was not what he was going for. It was a simple choice between getting on the news setting out a Liberal Democrat Vision for Scotland or not. Enjoy. The text from the Official Report is below. I rise to speak to my candidacy for the office of First Minister of Scotland. I am a candidate in this contest because this is a democracy. Democracies are about the presentation of ...

Responding to the Government's embargoed energy announcement, Liberal Democrat Climate Change and Energy spokesperson Wera Hobhouse MP said: The fact the Government had to be dragged to court in order to announce this half-baked plan shows they simply don't care about tackling climate change or cutting energy bills. This updated Net Zero strategy once more falls far too short. There is no clear pathway to ending our fossil fuel dependency, a de facto ban remains on onshore wind and there is no remit for the regulator Ofgem to have a clear net zero objective. This is just compounding the Government's ...
