The Joy of Six 1120

"We live in a global, interconnected community and it is ridiculous to think that if we only act in our own self interest, there will not be consequences to our ability to engage internationally. It's not as if we are anywhere near the top of the league table of countries where refugees flee." Tim Farron says that if Rwanda can support the wellbeing and integration of refugees, then so can the UK. Pam Jarvis argues that changes to education have created a toxic environment of overbearing discipline, 'zero tolerance' and the rote learning of a narrow curriculum. Lucinda Dickens Hawksley, ...

The latest edition of my weekly political polling round-up, The Week in Polls, is out. As it says: The current fashion in political punditry is to talk about whether the political prospects for the Conservatives have turned a corner. As with most such punditry fashions, it has three key ingredients... Black mould has been around in Ludlow and across the nation for decades. Concern about its health effects came to a head in November 2022 when a coroner ruled the death of two-year old Awaab Ishak was due to black mould. Ludlow councillors started getting urgent reports of black mould after that inquest. I issued an appeal on social media for more cases to be brought forward. All but one of the cases, which was in a private rent where the tenant had moved on, were in social housing. We identified seven cases as a priority and the last of ...

It's high time we heard more from the wonderful Sister Rosetta Tharpe. We've seen her singing Didn't It Rain? on the platform of Wilbraham Road station in suburban Manchester in 1964. Here she is more than a decade before singing, playing the guitar and reminding us that black American religious music was part of the mix that produced rock. I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. (Psalms 34:4)

The extent to which MPs are raking in cash from secondary employment, instead of doing the full time job they have been elected to, is revealed in today's Observer, who report that former chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, and former health secretary, Matt Hancock, agreed to work for £10,000 a day to further the interests of a fake South Korean firm after apparently being duped by the campaign group Led by Donkeys. The paper says that Kwarteng attended a preliminary meeting at his parliamentary office and agreed in principle to be paid the daily rate after saying he did not require a ...

Tom Arms' World Review

UK The appearance of ex-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson before the House of Commons Privileges Committee has echoes of the fate of Charles the First and James the Second. Each of the above cases helped to establish the supremacy of parliament over the monarchy, or the executive. The modern-day British Prime Minister straddles both institutions. They must be a member of parliament and command the support of a majority of the House of Commons. But at the same time they are officially appointed by the monarch to represent them in parliament. They are accountable to both institutions, but as the ...

Correction Oops. Due to being upset by the time change, my excuse and I am sticking to it, I said clocks went backwards but of course they leapt forwd one hour. All the more reason for abandoning the habit of changing clocks twice a year. Original article Morning, if you are awake yet. Did you oversleep? Take a lie in? Or rush to work an hours earlier than usual. Overnight at 1am the clocks went back to midnight, cutting an hour off the night hours. Digital clocks will have adjusted automatically. Many people will be adjusting their analogue clocks. A ...

Yesterday, we had the great pleasure of visiting the fascinating exhibition of the artwork of the late Rosemary Matheson-Dear. Rosemary's prolific artwork going back to 1947 shows her great talent and the exhibition is well worth a visit. Rosemary and Denis Matheson-Dear were much respected West End residents and great supporters of Harris Academy over many years. The exhibition is open again today - Sunday 26th March - from 10am to 4pm at 324 Blackness Road. Entrance is £5 and proceeds of the exhibition will go to the Guide Dogs charity. We are pictured with Jonathan Matheson-Dear, one of Rosemary's ...
