Interest rates rise: Sunak's pledge to halve inflation in tatters Responding to the Bank of England raising interest rates, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for the Treasury Sarah Olney MP said: This news will come as a hammer blow to countless hardworking families. People seeing their mortgage bills go up by hundreds of pounds a month have been left high and dry by this Government, which sent interest rates soaring with their catastrophic mini budget. Rishi Sunak's pledge to halve inflation is in tatters. The Government could be cutting household energy bills and extending energy support for businesses to help keep prices ...

Four Independent councillors on East Devon District Council - the leader of the council and three cabinet members - are to stand for the Liberal Democrats in May. They are council leader Paul Arnott and the cabinet members Nick Hookway, Geoff Jung and Marianne Rixson. Since 2019, the council has been run by the East Devon Alliance, comprising Lib Dem, Green and Independent councillors. A spokesperson for the four told Devon Live: "The historic election victory of Richard Foord MP last summer was a watershed moment. In order to grow a progressive, centrist East Devon - with Homes, the Environment ...

In early 2003 I was in Sierra Leone working on post-war reforms and rebel disarmament. I was running past the run-down Russian UN helicopters on Lumley beach when I received the call. It was already known that British Forces had attempted to find a way to appoint the first regional government; in Basra, one of the four UK-controlled Iraqi governorates. By agreement with the US, the UK had been tasked with finding a model. They were looking for someone 'reckless' with relevant experience. Folks knew I was against the war, but the final make-or-break question from the official was 'you're ...

We've just realised we hadn't posted Ed Davey's speech to Scottish Conference on 10th March. It's a wee bit out of date because it was before the Budget. Although it's a bit later than usual, we do like to post speeches to maintain the historical record. The speech came the day after that historic by-election gain from the SNP in Edinburgh. Ed was introduced by Aberdeenshire Councillor Yi-Pei Chou Turvey who was elected last year. So here we go: Good afternoon Conference! And thank you Yi-Pei for your kind introduction. It's great to be back with you all here in ...

The Guardian reports that the author of the devastating report on the Metropolitan police has criticised the force's commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, for refusing to accept her description of the force as institutionally racist, misogynistic and homophobic, describing his reasoning as "hollow". As the paper says, Louise Casey's report on Tuesday excoriated the Met and found widespread bias against its own staff and the public, with officers found to have got away with acts so serious they amount to crimes. They add that the report also said stop and search was biased, the force had made choices to degrade its ...

This is a cutting from the Leicester Daily Mercury for Monday 6 September 1965, so the concert must have taken place on 4 September. I see newspapers were still giving 'pop' scare quotes, but I like the wiggly line around the item. I used to do a similar thing with a black felt pen when I included press cuttings in Focus and we pasted the artwork down. Letraset and Cow Gum, isn't it? Marvellous. Where did the concert take place? A Scott Walker timeline gives the venue as 'Embi Hall', which must mean the Embi Club. Cinema Treasures says this ...

Responding to a new report by the National Foundation for Educational Research showing that the number of teaching vacancies has risen by 93% since 2019, Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson Munira Wilson MP said: The soaring number of unfilled teaching posts is yet more proof that the Conservatives are failing our children badly. Millions of children are being taught by someone who isn't an expert in their subject, all because the Conservatives are missing their own recruitment targets and driving thousands of teachers out of the profession. It's just not good enough. Investing in schools and teachers is vital for giving ...

Residents will recall that we have previously highlighted the unkempt state of this path, particularly the planters and a lot of graffiti. There's now been a couple of site visits to discuss a positive future for the planters and we are grateful to a local resident who has proposed community use of the planters for growing herbs, vegetables, fruits or flowers. Given the waiting list for allotments, this is a really good idea and the council agreed to bring the site up to a standard where this can happen and work on that has already commenced - see second photo ...
