The Deputy Mayor of Gateshead Robert Waugh made an interesting claim recently. At the Council's budget meeting he sat on his hands when it came to the vote on our amendment calling for £1.4 million to be used from reserves to keep threatened leisure centres open long enough to find community groups that can take on the running of them. This proposal is supported by the group that is campaigning
Another enjoyable lesson in East London railway history. From Shadwell you can take a London Overground train to Dalston Junction. After Whitechapel, this service uses the viaduct that once took trains into the vanished Broad Street station, which we saw the other day. You can support Jago's videos via his Patreon page.
Braverman's dangerous rhetoric trashes Britain's proud legacy Ed Davey raises deadly ambulance delays at PMQs Suella Braverman: Lib Dems demand inquiry into potential breach of ministerial code Steve Brine must stand down from Health Select Committee amid sleaze scandal Braverman's dangerous rhetoric trashes Britain's proud legacy Responding to comments made by the Home Secretary this morning on the government's small boats proposals, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesperson Alistair Carmichael said: Suella Braverman can't even answer basic questions about her flawed, callous and inhumane policy. To suggest that those who oppose these divisive plans are somehow betraying Britain is stooping to ...
If you have been following to news from Palestine & Israel in recent weeks, you will have seen the appalling rise in violence which has left many dead and even more severely injured on both sides. The violence reached a peak last week with what can only be described as a pogrom carried out by Israeli Settlers on the Palestinian village of Harawa after two young Israelis had been killed by a Palestinian gunman. This rise in violence is worrying and is no doubt connected with the threats to democracy by the new Israeli Government under Binyamin Netanyahu which includes, ...
"The Church sleeps on. It sleeps on while 60 000 people are moved from their homes in the interest of a fantastic racial theory: it sleeps on while plans are made (and implemented) to transform the education of Africans into a thing called "Native Education" - which will erect a permanent barrier against Western culture reaching the African at all: it sleeps on while a dictatorship is swiftly being created over all Native Affairs in the Union, so that speech and movement and association are no longer free... In God's name. Cannot the Church bestir itself all over the world ...
So, with a bit of help from my colleagues, especially Nick da Costa, the ever helpful Chair of Federal Conference Committee, I've managed to navigate the Conference Standing Orders (note to self - might be worth reading them at some point) in pursuit of my proposed change to Business Motion F3. It's been agreed by FIRC and the current Liberal Democrat member of the ALDE Party Bureau that I am right to be concerned, and that they won't object to my proposal, and Nick has advised that he'd prefer a separate vote. And so, I lodged the request using the ...
Well said, Wendy Chamberlain talking about Afghan refugees in the House of Commons.
Christine Jardine tabled a Bill aimed at forcing social media companies to report on the action they are taking to tackle online abuse of women. Women are more likely to be targeted by online abuse, sexual harassment or stalking. This is why I am proposing my Online Abuse (Reporting) Bill to tackle this blight in our society and make internet safer for everyone.#InternationalWomensDay #IWD23 #OnlineAbuseBill #SaferOnline pic.twitter.com/yuylixPLoG — Christine Jardine [IMG: 🔶] (@cajardineMP) March 8, 2023 From the Edinburgh Reporter: Ms Jardine called the UK Government's lack of action on the issue "a dereliction of duty". She said: "Social media ...

At PMQs today, Ed Davey told the devastating story of an elderly woman Jean, who dialled 999 only to be told it would be an eight hour wait for an ambulance to arrive. Jean was forced to drive herself to Eastbourne District General Hospital, where she collapsed in A&E and died an hour later. He asked the Prime Minister to apologise to Jean's family and all those who have lost loved ones amid a crisis in ambulance services in the South East and across the country. Lib Dem's Ed Davey asks for apology for family of woman who died after ...

Today, the front line between democracy and authoritarianism seems to be running through the centre of Tbilisi. The new government-backed 'foreign agents' law has triggered a large new wave of protests, in the latest round of power consolidation by the governing party, Georgian Dream. Essentially, the law provides for a new legal labelling and status [...]
The News & Star reports: The Liberal Democrat group on Cumberland Council are celebrating as councillor Chris Wills joins the group. The city councillor and the Upperby representative on the new Cumberland authority quit Labour last month... Councillor Chris Wills said: "We face some challenging times ahead and residents in Upperby Ward, and elsewhere are worried about the cost of living, crime local services and the environment. "My priority is to work hard for residents in Upperby Ward, and I know I can best do that as part of as part of a hard-working team of Liberal Democrat councillors." Councillor ...
Ludlow MP Philip Dunne has done it again. Calling those who criticise his and his government's weakness on sewage overflows "political". It is never political to call out government failures and Dunne has spectacularly failed. Under the plans backed by Dunne, water companies only need to reduce the number of discharges by 2.2% a year and volume of discharges by 2.7% a year. That's letting privatised water companies off the hook for 20 more years while people bath and swim in sewage. In his own Ludlow constituency, Seven Trent Water (STW) reduced dumps into rivers or the sea by 23% ...
On International Women's Day, Chinese Lib Dems' Merlene Emerson interviewed our newest member, Ms Yue He Parkinson, about why she is interested in UK and China politics and her decision to join the party. ME: Yue, could you tell us a bit about yourself, your background, education and career? When did you settle in the UK? Yue: I was born, educated and worked in Canton, China, and moved to the UK in 2004 to study International Relations at the University of Bristol, and awarded an MSc. Since then, I have settled down in Portishead, Bristol with my family of 4. ...
I am still so angry and appalled by the immigration legislation announced by Rishi Sunak yesterday, that it is difficult to find the words to condemn it properly. It is hard to disagree with Gary Lineker, when he tweeted that 'This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s.' The fact that he enraged so many Tory MPs in making that comparison was just a bonus. Nobody is saying that this policy is in any way as bad as, or can be ...

Speaking ahead of International Women's Day, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey said: International Women's Day is a chance to celebrate women, honour their achievements, and reflect on where we still need to go. Our country has taken many important steps towards achieving gender equality and I'm proud of the role the Liberal Democrats have played in delivering that progress. This year, I will be celebrating so many incredible women – who have brought us this far; who work tirelessly for equality; and who will take us even further in the years to come. * Newshound: bringing you the ...
A number of residents have contacted us about the unfortunate possible closure of the Invergowrie Medical Practice from 16th June.
