Sunak must veto Johnson honours list 97% of NHS trusts are missing cancer treatment targets in "shocking gap in care" Sunak must veto Johnson honours list Responding to reports in The Times that Boris Johnson has nominated his father for a Knighthood in his Resignation Honours list, Liberal Democrat Chief Whip Wendy Chamberlain MP said: The Conservative party is rewarding Boris Johnson's failure, lies and corruption. If future Honours Lists are to have any shred of credibility, Sunak must step in and veto this list. Honours should be reserved for those who've gone above and beyond to contribute to our ...

As I forgot to post Lord Bonkers' observations from January 1993 until February, it's already time to see what he was saying in Liberator in March of that year. And it seems that, though John Major's 'Back to Basics' speech was not made until the Conservative conference that autumn, such ideas were already in the air and in need of satirising. Incidentally, I am not sure that the old boy is right here. I have never been able to establish whether he was defeated in 1910 - and, if so, at which of that year's general elections - or inherited ...

The Joy of Six 1115

"The worst instincts of a dictator are on display in Vladimir Putin's Russia: the overcentralisation of power; the repression of dissent; the futile attempt to fool all of the people all of the time; and the search for security in expansion and isolation." Ronald Suny says Stalin's phantom continues to stalk the Soviet and post-Soviet landscape, right up to the present war with Ukraine. Monica Horten explained before the event why leaving the EU single market to uncertainties of supply, price hikes and possible shortages in Britain's supermarkets. David Higham makes 10 suggestions to improve the UK's regional policy. "The ...

Liberal Democrats will soon be gathering in York for a welcome return to our in-person federal conferences. It will also though be the last time we have a conference in York with Cllr Keith Aspden as the council leader. He's announced that he's standing down in May: Liberal Democrat Cllr Aspden has served as a local councillor for 20 years, representing Fulford since 2003 and Fulford and Heslington since 2015. He has led the Liberal Democrat group since 2013 and has been the council leader since 2019. Cllr Aspden said he was taking the opportunity to return to his career ...

We have seen it so many times around Ludlow. A pedestrian lying on the pavement. A worried group huddled around. A dash to charity shop to grab blankets and coats to keep the victim warm while they wait, often for a long time, for the ambulance. Not all falls are a result of tripping on a faulty or uneven pavement but too many are. It would help us tackle the menace of uneven and broken pavements if we could collect local data on falls. This can be submitted to me in confidence by Messenger, text, or email (andy@andybodders.co.uk). The trigger ...

Following the somewhat divisive reign of Lord Andrew Adonis as Chair of the European Movement, an election contest is underway to replace him. There are three candidates, who may be more or less familiar to Liberal Democrat Voice readers: Tom Brake Mike Galsworthy Patience Wheatcroft Unsurprisingly, perhaps, there's plenty of buzz in Liberal Democrat circles in support of Tom, who's certainly been busy since he narrowly lost Carshalton and Wallington in 2019 (despite actually increasing his share of the vote). He became the Director of Unlock Democracy (a fine organisation) in 2020 and has been campaigning strongly for reform of ...

It's been a long time since I attended a Federal Conference, or even a Regional one, in person, and the world feels like a somewhat different place post-COVID. But I don't have a role or function, and it'll be nice to simply try to take the pulse of the Party less than two years before a General Election. I suppose that my key question will be, "does the Party offer a sense that it has a destination in mind?", and it isn't clear to me yet that there is one, other than give an impression that we're better than the ...

The Independent reports that most voters think Brexit is to blame for widespread shortages of fruit and vegetables on supermarket shelves. The paper says that in a Savanta survey, the majority of the public (57 per cent) said Britain's exit from the EU was behind the lack of fresh produce: Only one in three (36 per cent) said Brexit was not to blame. The poll also discovered 57 per cent had been affected by shortages while 40 per cent were unaffected. Unusual weather which has hurt crops in Spain and north Africa has been blamed for UK shelves being short ...
