It's been a very strange last couple of weeks. First came the shock news that Nicola Sturgeon had resigned as First Minister. I don't think anyone saw that coming and I have to admit to not sharing the glee that some of my fellow Liberal Democrats expressed at this development. Nicola Sturgeon has a somewhat mixed legacy, but there can be no denying her commitment to equalities or her skills as a communicator. In those respects at least, she will be a tough act to follow. In the coming weeks and months we will perhaps find ourselves in a better ...

Shropshire Tory council leader says council tax hike is down to Tory government and her Tory predece...
Shropshire Council has been controlled by the Conservatives since its inception in 2009. On Sunday, its current leader, its fourth, was interviewed by Elizabeth Glinka on BBC Midlands Politics about the 5% rise in council tax from April (video below). The interview was remarkable in three respects. Council leader Lezley Picton said that previous council leaders had failed to raise council tax leading to the position it faces now where the council's budget is not adequate to meet its needs. The government had failed to recognise the costs that rural areas face and are not giving counties like Shropshire adequate ...

Chunk of pork makes a surprising 'thud' as it falls from the sky and lands in woman's garden
I think this was foretold in the Book of Revelation, and it's certainly won the Leicester Mercury our Headline of the Day Award.
The Bishop's Stortford Independent reports: Liberal Democrats have picked their candidate to wrestle the Hertford and Stortford constituency from the Conservatives at the next General Election. Helen, who lives in St Albans, said: "I am absolutely delighted to be selected by the Hertford and Stortford Liberal Democrats to be their candidate in the next General ...

The Independent reports on the view of the Institute for Fiscal Studies that Chancellor Jeremy Hunt could afford to give public sector workers a bigger pay rise at next month's Budget by scrapping plans for a fuel duty freeze. The IFS say short-term savings from the energy support scheme are looking less costly than first feared, but the think tank believes that Hunt could dig deep into government pockets to help fund a one-off bonus for public sector workers in a bid to avert intensifying industrial action: IFS director Paul Johnson said a pay rise averaging 5.5 per cent - ...
As the Prime Minister "sells" the Northern Ireland protocol deal, promising to tough out DUP criticism, the Liberal Democrats have responded: We hope that this protocol deal will be a step forward – bringing much-needed certainty and stability for Northern Ireland. The Conservative Government was responsible for this mess in the first place. It shouldn't have taken years for them to get to this point. — Liberal Democrats (@LibDems) February 27, 2023 * News Meerkat - keeping a look-out for Liberal Democrat news.
