I once blogged about a wonderful film from 1945 of the derelict Glamorganshire Canal, which used to run from Merthyr to the sea at Cardiff Docks. Most of the route has been lost to road schemes and redevelopment, but stretches do survive. Bob's Rail Relics found one of them in Forest Farm Country Park in the northern suburbs of Cardiff and posted this video. He has another video about a gloriously unexpected survival right in the centre of the city, and I shall post that here another day. You can subscribe to Bob's Rail Relics on YouTube.

The Condition of England, which was published in 1909, is probably Charles Masterman's best-known book. It is best known for its analysis of the different social classes, but also contains a chapter on literature and progress. And in it, Masterman discusses the thought of Richard Jefferies in some detail. Wordsworth assumes a Nature benignant and responsive, a spirit whose dwelling is the light of setting ...

For those of you who don't have the joy of living in the countryside, you will be aware of the existence of large boxes on wheels which pass up and down roads near you, stopping regularly to pick up and drop off complete strangers. Buses are relatively rare in my neck of the woods, however, so journeys need to be planned more thoroughly. And that's how I spent my Saturday, using the temporary £2 fare to travel from Bury St Edmunds to Lincoln, using five buses and travelling via Thetford, Kings Lynn, Spalding and Skegness. And yes, it took more ...

Word of the day comes from the Guardian, though there is no online version of the article at the time of writing, even though the paper has written on the subject before and even published an editorial back in 2010. They say: lots of German men nowadays routinely sit down to pee. From quite early on, so it is claimed, German sons are taught that being a Sitzpinkler - translate it yourself - is the done ...
