Extraordinary landscape and extraordinary engineering. The Rivelin Tunnel takes water from Ladybower Reservoir in the Derwent Valley and delivers it to the reservoirs on the River Rivelin that supply Sheffield. This video crosses the hills in between to trace its route and on the way relates the history of its construction. You can support these Trekking Exploration videos via their Patreon page.

I never cease to be impressed by the old boy's willingness to move with the times. Two months ago it was Monster: now he's into podcasts. No wonder he got into Bakelite and wireless telegraphy early on. Monday Have you come across podcasts? They are like the wireless, except that the people talking will wait for you if you want to use the thunder box or recharge your tumbler of Auld Johnston, that most prized of Highland malts. Among the most popular, I am told, are 'The Rest is Politics' and 'The Rest is History'. Inspired by their success, I ...

Embed from Getty ImagesHere's an encouraging story for a Monday. John Curtice says that, according to a large opinion poll carried out for the Telegraph, the Conservatives may face unprecedented losses at the next general election. That poll shows the Tories are down 22 per cent on their performance at the last election. That, of course, suggests they will do very badly next time round. But the news for them is worse than that headline figure suggests: There are 90 seats in which the Conservatives won less than 22 per cent of the vote in 2019 and thus where it ...

Bonkers? You have nothing better to do? What's the point? Don't you feel that your efforts are worthless? I often wonder whether standing again, literally after being elected 12 months ago, sounds "sane". It feels like only yesterday I wrote to readers of the Liberal Democrat Voice to introduce myself as a candidate in the May 2022 Local Elections. I wanted to share my story, challenge some of the stereotypes and prove that only the sky's the limit if we passionately believe in something. This is why I was delighted to get elected and overall, I am enjoying every minute ...

I'm a believer in an interconnected world, where the United Kingdom builds strong links with its neighbours and across the globe on the basis of mutual interest and cooperation. That means that I'm not a Conservative, as they evidently believe that such links should be purely transactional and, given their sense of entitlement, heavily weighted in our favour. Funnily enough, that doesn't seem to be working out for them or, more importantly, for the rest of us. There's been a good deal of disappointment on this website about the fact that, whilst Liberal Democrats have been vocal about what is ...

Another PPE scandal

Here we go again. The Guardian reports that new documents suggest a lifestyle company won a £25.8m government contract for PPE through the so-called VIP lane after the new Conservative chair, Greg Hands, was approached by a local Tory activist. They says that Luxe Lifestyle, a company trading in "specialised design activities", had no published accounts at the time the contract was awarded, and did not appear to have a history of supplying PPE: It is understood Hands, then a trade minister, made a referral to officials in early April 2020 after a Conservative activist, Mark Higton, approached him about ...
