Over on newburytoday.co.uk, there is a fine obituary of Paul Hannon, former LibDem leader of Newbury District Council. The piece includes this tribute to Paul from Lord Benyon, former MP for Newbury: I was leader of the Tory group on Newbury District Council and leader of the opposition when he was leader of the council and found him to be a very effective political operator. He and I would often go to the pub [The Dolphin] after a council meeting and resolve many issues over a pint of beer....He was a gifted politician and powerful speaker. He could be very ...

I'm not bringing you a contemporary newspaper account of the 1899 meeting to oppose the Boer War that Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch chaired in Liskeard: I'm bringing you a dramatic reconstruction of it. Kenneth Griffith was an actor and maker of documentaries whose strongly held political views regularly brought him into conflict with television bosses and the broadcasting authorities. His Independent obituary from 2006 was candid:He could exasperate colleagues by his cantankerous manner and stout refusal to compromise his artistic and professional integrity, especially when offered work by those whom he called the "priggish cuckoos" of the BBC's middle management. Even ...

The Liberal governments of Henry Campbell-Bannerman and H.H. Asquith, from 1905 to 1916, included many 'big beasts'. Sir Edward Grey served as Foreign Secretary 1905-16 and remains the longest-serving holder of the office. He maintained good relations with France and Russia at a time of great instability in Europe. When his efforts to avert conflict failed, in 1914, Grey persuaded a divided cabinet to support Britain's entry to the First World War. Richard Haldane was Secretary for War 1905-12 and created the Territorial Army and the British Expeditionary Force. As Lord Chancellor after 1912 he pursued a series of judicial ...

The Office for National Statistics has announced that "Public sector borrowing in December 2022 was £27.4 billion, the highest December figure since monthly records began in January 1993". Responding to the new, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Sarah Olney MP said: A toxic combination of Conservative incompetence and reckless decision making at the top of Government have blown a hole in the country's finances, and now ministers are making British families pay for it. A long-list of Conservative Chancellors have hiked taxes, added hundreds of pounds a month to mortgages and left the country with unnecessarily high borrowing costs. The British ...

The Guardian carries the astonishing (and appalling) news that a government minister has admitted that two hundred asylum-seeking children who were placed in hotels run by the Home Office have gone missing. They include one girl and at least 13 children under the age of 16: The disclosure comes after the Observer reported that a whistleblower from a Home Office hotel in Brighton had claimed that some children had been abducted off the street outside the facility and bundled into cars. The department was warned by police that the vulnerable occupants of the hotel - asylum-seeking children who had recently ...

A record 350,000 patients, equivalent to the population of Leicester, waited more than 12 hours to be admitted to hospital from A&E in 2022. The figures were uncovered in new analysis by the Liberal Democrats showing a staggering rise in 12 hour delays at A&E since 2015. Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey has set out an NHS rescue plan to reduce the shocking A&E delays which he warned are "needlessly costing lives". This includes recruiting 8,000 more GPs, giving pharmacists more powers to prescribe medicines and boosting funding to get eligible patients out of hospital and into social care. The ...

As residents may be aware, Shopmobility Dundee was a charity that provided the use of mobility scooters, power and manual wheelchairs for all ages in and around the city centre, and it sadly closed recently after years of providing an excellent service. One member of the former Shopmobility team has pointed out that the promotional sign in Tay Square (pictured) near to The Rep still features the service. We have therefore asked the City Council to have the signage updated and the Head of Planning & Economic Development has advised : "You may be aware that several of the wayfinding ...
