A Hard Frost

After a week of slush and damp, tonight there is a hard frost in Tallinn. The general election campaign has started with the parties submitting their lists of candidates and announcing their programs. The polls seem to show a polarization of views. Although the Liberal Reform party of PM Kaja Kallas is set to remain as the largest party in the 101 seat Riigikogu, the steady rise of the far right EKRE seems to place them firmly in second place, replacing the Social Liberal Centre Party, who seem set to lose several seats. In addition to the Conservative Isamaaliit and ...

This year's British Chess Championships will take place at The Venue, De Montfort University, in Leicester, with events running from 21 to 30 July, says the English Chess Federation. I'll certainly go along to watch for a day or two, but I fear I'm too rusty to survive in any of the open rapid-play events.

Gavin Williamson, the walking advertisement for how embarrassing some political honours are and a walking snub to those who really do deserve their knighthoods, might not be a knight forever: The forfeiture committee, part of the Cabinet Office, considers cases when the holder of an honour has brought the system into disrepute. It can recommend to the King, through the prime minister, that an honour should be removed. The Liberal Democrats' chief whip Wendy Chamberlain wrote to the committee's chair Sir Chris Wormald to ask him to "consider withdrawing Gavin Williamson's knighthood if the serious allegations made against him are ...

Lib Dem Councillor Mathew Hulbert has been taking to the airwaves to criticise the Church of England and the Archbishop of Canterbury for giving into the Conservative side of the Anglican Communion. Yesterday, the Church announced that, while it would not allow same sex marriages in Church, they would allow blessings. However, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said that he personally would not conduct them. He said: But because of my pastoral care and responsibility of being a focus of unity for the whole communion I will – while being extremely joyfully celebratory of these new resources – I will ...

I am pleased to tell you about a new Affiliated Organisation we are starting called Operation Social Equality. It is open to all members of the Liberal Democrats but has a specific focus to support members from low-socio economic backgrounds. Studies tell us that those from low socio-economic backgrounds are amongst the most under-represented in politics and also the least engaged. So three years ago the journey started to look at what can be done to help the Liberal Democrats become more inclusive and to encourage more people from low socio-economic backgrounds to engage with the party. I heard from ...

China is shrinking. India is growing. Sometime this year the sub-continental nation will usurp China as the most populous country on earth. This and a number of other ineluctable facts will have a profound impact on China, India, Asia and the rest of the world. Every economy needs workers to produce goods and services. The more workers – especially relatively cheap ones – the faster a country's GDP grows. There are other factors at play. China's pensioner population is rapidly growing. The proportion of retirees has expanded from 37.12 percent in 2010 to 44.14 percent in 2020 which means fewer ...

The Independent reports that, fresh from his own law-breaking stint in the back of a moving vehicle, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is facing a call to launch an inquiry into whether Nadhim Zahawi broke the ministerial code, after the Tory Party Chair reportedly paid millions to settle a dispute with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) over his tax. The paper says that the prime minister has defended the under-pressure Tory chair, claiming that Mr Zahawi has addressed the matter in full after claims that he stumped up a "seven-figure" sum to settle the dispute, but the opposition believe that a ...

We were shocked earlier in the month by Shropshire Council proposals to charge for street closures for not-for-profit, community and Remembrance parades. The reaction around the county was furious. I wrote: "Charging for commemorating those that have died to support our freedom is to put it bluntly, disgraceful. It shows that the council has lost any sense of moral purpose and that it is more interested in earning money than paying respect. And it is mean spirited. Charging for Remembrance events will only raise £1,400 year." Last Wednesday, the council's cabinet agreed to scrap the proposals and charge only for ...
