The Independent reports: A law is to be tabled in parliament aiming to force the appointment of an anti-slavery watchdog, after the government left the post vacant while planning to make it harder for victims to gain support. There has been no Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner since April 2022, and following an unexplained eight-month delay to the appointment Suella Braverman has scrapped the recruitment process... A bill being tabled by the Liberal Democrats on Thursday would introduce safeguards by giving parliament the power to appoint an Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner if the post is left vacant for three months or more... The Church of England has committed £100 million to a fund to "address past wrongs" over its investments in the slave trade in the 18th century. Of course, people will say it is too little, too late and will not reach those most affected, and I have some sympathy for that reaction. But it is nevertheless both a substantial commitment and a symbolic act which will hopefully encourage other public bodies to follow suit. As an active member of the Church of England I applaud the stance of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Faced with demands for compensation he commissioned the ...

Andrew Bridgen, the MP for North West Leicestershire, has been suspended by the Conservative Party for spreading misinformation about Covid vaccination. Bridgen, who is currently serving a five-day suspension from parliament for breaking rules on registering financial interests, will lose the party whip while an investigation takes place. Just when you thought Boris Johnson was on the verge of making a political comeback, a Tory cabinet member makes plain in the most humiliating way, that the former Prime Minister is still persona non grata in government circles. As the Independent reports, Business secretary Grant Shapps appeared to have airbrushed Boris Johnson out of a picture promoting Monday night's failed Virgin Orbit flight: Posting on Twitter, Mr Shapps shared an image showing himself and two officials in front of a Virgin rocket at the spaceport in Newquay, Cornwall ahead of Monday's launch. But eagle-eyed users noticed that Mr Johnson, ...

Some time ago, we reported to the Roads Maintenance Partnership that one of the two bollards on Perth Road near the bottom of Ryehill Lane (just west of Dil Se restaurant) was missing and also asked that it repaired the grating adjacent to the bollards as it was knocked off and needed reinstated. The bollard was promptly repaired but the grating - polychannel - remains to be sorted. We have now been promised that a programme of polychannel repairs has been agreed so hopefully this will be resolved soon.
