"There was one document, though, that really galvanised Dickens: in early 1843, parliament was presented with a report on the extent of child labour in the country. It detailed unimaginable horrors: interviews with seven-year-olds who had spent half their lives in mines, smoking eight-year-olds who had been working so long their own fathers didn't know when they started. Anecdotal evidence that 'young boys are taken down as soon as they can stand on their legs'." The Penguin Books site looks at the political background to A Christmas Carol. "Difference does not lead us into a meaningless relativism, but rather into ...
It's Christmas Eve and Santa Claus has left the North Pole. As usual NORAD has its tracking system up and running, as it has been sinec 1955. However, as reported by the Mirror, this tracker was so popular this year that it briefly crashed, leaving Santa to go about his business without the eyes of the world on him. Perhaps he does his best work unseen.
I admire Polly Toynbee greatly, so it was disappointing to find her falling for the same inaccuracy as lesser commentators with regard to the reporting of Christian identity in the census. "This is the first Christmas since time immemorial that most people in this country are not Christians." This is not true. Ticking a box about Christian identity in a census is very different from "being a Christian". The vast majority of people in this country have not been Christian for a very long time, and it shows. While I accept completely Toynbee's strictures about the damage done to the ...

2022 was not a brilliant year for Liverpool because of both Tory incompetence nationally and Labour incompetence locally. But the spirit of Liverpool will not be broken. The approach of a new calendar year is always a suitable time for ... Continue reading →
There is only one word that springs to my mind this Christmas; it is HOPE. The last 12 months have been so difficult for us individually, collectively and for the whole global family. The end of the pandemic, re-adjustment to life after Covid, invasion of Ukraine, problems "at home"; endless political saga, high inflation and a huge cost of living crisis. The list of real issues and reasons to lose HOPE is endless. Christmas is usually a good opportunity to stop, rest and recharge our batteries. Religious or not, we all look forward to Christmas to reconnect with our friends, ...
Yes, a year has gone by already and it's time once again for one of my animated Christmas cards.
Merry Christmas! I love this time of year. The cards, the carols, the chocolate, but most of all the chance to spend time together as a family – to celebrate together, to have fun together, give thanks to one another and to give thanks to God. For me, the message of Christmas is for us to treat others – as we would wish to be treated and the symbol of Christmas is light – the light of hope, in the darkest week of the year. Hope that we all desperately need for these most challenging of times. So from my ...
Royal Choral Society: The Shepherds' FarewellWizzard: I Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day
In the old days, in the Sixties, you didn't get chocolates in Advent calendars: you just got little pictures - a ball, a trumpet or some other possible Christmas gift. But on Christmas Eve you had double doors to open, and they always revealed a nativity scene. So I 've made today's window double-sized and chosen two pieces of Christmas music. First, the sublime Shepherds' Farewell from Berlioz's 1854 oratorio L'enfance du Christ. This comes from the second act as the Holy Family prepare to leave for Egypt. That's above. And below you will find what should have been the ...
