Every town has a few neglected sites. This one in Northampton Road, Market Harborough, had been earmarked by the council for a coach park. That decision, which was announced in 2018, was a sign of how many visitors we now get. But it was put on hold two years later as Covid bit. Recently there has been a campaign to turn it into a garden to commemorate the late Queen's platinum jubilee. But, reports Harborough FM, a legal issue involving the mobile phone mast on the site is holding up any redevelopmen of the site.. So it will remain in ...

I was very pleased and proud that our motion regarding FIFA received overwhelming support at ALDE (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in Europe) Council in Bratislava earlier this month. As the author of this motion, I wasn't absolutely sure how much this issue would resonate amongst our sister parties, for as a very passionate LGBTQI+ football fan, I had felt extremely let down by the staging of this World Cup, in all aspects of human rights, and to the extent, that the LGBTQ+ issue was the major factor. However the treatment of migrants workers and women only added to the ...

Lydiate's Hidden Gem

A new booklet from well-known local historian Pamela Russell In my last posting, I talked about a local history and heritage project within Sefton Borough (Community Within Communities) organised by Sefton Council for Voluntary Service and funded by the National Lottery which I've been pleased to be a part of. This time I'm focusing on one of the outcomes of the project, 3 historic sites within Lydiate where I reside these days. I've known Pam Russell for many years and her expertise in history and heritage is well known on Merseyside and beyond. She was, prior to retirement, a Senior ...

From today's The Independent: Brexit has cost the UK a staggering £33bn in lost trade and investment, according to a new study that found that the economic damage is even worse than previously feared. Research by the Centre for European Reform (CER), shared with The Independent, shows that Britain's economy is 5.5 per cent smaller than it would have been if the country had remained inside the EU... Layla Moran, the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for international development, said the research showed that the government's approach to trade with the EU "is doing serious damage to our economy". She added: "Their ...

When the government passed the 2021 Environment Act it was taken as a commitment to the principle that 'the polluter pays', however the evidence seems to suggest that the contrary is true. The Independent reports that the government is spending a billion pounds less on cutting domestic emissions than it is expected to raise through carbon taxes over the next 12 months, contradicting that key principle: The UK emissions trading scheme - which charges certain businesses for emitting greenhouse gases - is expected to raise £6.5bn this year, more than six times the £1bn it raised in 2021-2022, according to ...

The North Devon Gazette reports: Cllr Ian Roome, who represents Barnstaple North on Devon County Council, has been selected to fight the next General Election for the Liberal Democrats in North Devon, winning a members vote which concluded on Monday night. Ian Roome moved to North Devon in 1989 for his posting at RAF Chivenor. He has been Mayor of Barnstaple three times, now well known as a local charity fundraiser. Great to see my North Devon mate @Ianbarum selected to fight the seat for the @LibDems at the next election. The floods of comments coming in are a tribute ...

The headlines tell us the government had a court win this week, such as: Rwanda migrant plan is lawful, High Court rules [BBC] High Court ruling on Rwanda asylum policy 'a big win for the government', says Tory MP [Channel 4] But the detail is rather different because, as David Allen Green has pointed out, the court also ruled on the individuals as well as the overall policy: In the eight individual cases under review, the High Court decided that the removal decisions be quashed and the Home Secretary take the decisions again with proper regard to individual circumstances... The ...

There's only one song it's possible to choose today. Ring Out, Solstice Bells is a track from Jethro Tull's 1977 album Songs from the Wood. When I was 17 I thought this was the best LP there's ever been or could ever be (with the possible exception of Kate Bush's The Kick Inside.)
