I've searched the British Newspaper Archive and this is the earliest mention I can find of Steve (or Stevie) Winwood. It comes from the Birmingham Mail for 3 December 1963. The books say the Spencer Davis Group was originally called the Rhythm and Blues Quartet, but it seems that in practice two names were given prominence even above the name of the band. Where space allows in small ads, the band's billing was: Spencer Davies. Steve Winwood. R & B Quartet But here, where they had to get a second act in, just names were used. And at 15 years ...

Is it just me or are Wednesday by-elections becoming a little more common? Whatever the truth of that, there was one yesterday in a ward of Surrey County Council and it saw a Liberal Democrat gain. Congratulations to Harry Bopari and his team in Sunbury Common and Ashford Common. To form a full appreciation of the significance of the week's local by-election results you have to read the previews written by Andrew Teale. He wrote a special one for yesterday's contest and you can learn a number of things from it. The first is that Sunbury Common and Ashford Common ...

This day cannot pass without commenting on those comments by a now ex member of the royal household. I am sure I am not alone in having wanted to throw a brick at my radio, in my case an Alexa, listening to Radio 4 PM last night. The racist comments by Lady Susan Hussey were enough to make anyone angry. And then Petronella Wyatt defended her ladyship on the programme. It was sickening. There is no defence for racism. Wyatt's defence was that Lady Hussey was old and that somehow excused it. No. It doesn't. Many of my friends are ...

Some details in this article have been changed to ensure anonymity and safeguarding. Last week, I got a message from a young woman with a two year old in a social property built around 1990. Her son had been seriously ill and in hospital with bronchial issues. She had been complaining to the housing managers about black mould for a long while. This case is proving to be the tip of the iceberg. The death of two-year-old Awaab Ishak in Rochdale has heightened concerns. Tenants have always known that black mould is dangerous to health but housing associations and councils ...

I recorded the debate at the Gateshead Council cabinet meeting on 25th October. The cabinet took the decision to consult on the impact of closing Gateshead and Dunston Leisure Centres with the option to close Birtley Sports Hall as well. This was the meeting where it was revealed that Gateshead Council had not applied for levelling up funding from the government but instead has applied for

Just a quick thought on the ongoing row over institutional racism in the Royal Household, following reports of the late Queen's lady-in-waiting and Prince William's godmother being forced to resign for making offensive remarks during an event. The Independent says Ngozi Fulani, of Sistah Space, Britain's leading domestic abuse charity for Black women, spoke of the "traumatic" encounter in which Lady Susan Hussey asked what part of Africa she was from. They add that it happened at a Violence Against Women and Girls reception hosted by the Queen. As a result, Lady Hussey, who served as Queen Elizabeth II's lady-in-waiting ...

Buses are will not be serving Sandpits Avenue and Sidney Road until after February. This makes it difficult for people with limited mobility to get into town to see their GP, shop and to meet friends. The Ludlow Traveller is stepping in to provide a limited service into Ludlow on Fridays with an approximate collection time from Sandpits of 11:00 and return opportunities at 12:00, 13:00 and 15:30 by prior booking. Bus passes can't be used and passengers will need to pay £2.50 each way with cash to the driver. Cheaper than a taxi. All passengers will need to become ...

So I thought I would make a musical advent calendar here - 24 favourite pieces of Christmas music, both sacred and secular. This hymn of longing for redemption was first published in Germany in 1710, says Wikipedia, though it has been claimed to be much older than that. It found its way, in translation, into English hymnals in the middle of the 19th century. And the tune with which the words are now firmly associated has its origins in 15th-century France.
