Our town would not be the same without the furniture scheme. Established more than 20 years ago, it was pioneering. Unwanted furniture would be collected and refurbished. Some furniture would be sold raising funds that were ploughed back into the scheme. Other items were given, for a small fee, to residents in need. At its height, the furniture Scheme had a shop, the Renaissance Centre on Tower Street, as well as its long established warehouse and shop the bottom of Weeping Cross. The Weeping Cross site will close at the end of March. Operations will remain in Oswestry and Shrewsbury ...

The Truning Point?

I suspect this last couple of days, the 20th and 21st November 2023, could be noted by future historians as the turning point in which the British establishment abandoned fantasy and began the slow trudge back to sanity with regard to our relations with the EU. The one thing the Tories are "world beaters" at is perception management. For the couple of weeks or so before last Thursday's mini-Budget we had drip drip drips of information about how terrible things were going to be, preparing us for the worst. Then it turned out to be not so bad after all, ...

The other day, I overheard someone describing how they would like the "Stop Oil" protesters to be dealt with. It was not pleasant and I am not going to repeat their words here for fear of inciting hatred. Protests can be very tiresome and disturb our normal routine. But we have to be patient with them. The moment we start suggesting forcible ways to restrict peaceful protests, is the moment we stop being a fair democracy and, I would also suggest, the moment we stop being British. I was particularly appalled at the treatment of the young man in Edinburgh ...

I was very pleased to have been part of the successful Federal International Relations Committee's (FIRC) 2-hour international marathon at the West Midlands conference last weekend. Full marks to current FIRC Chair Phil Bennion. A FIRC First! Having just been elected to the new Federal International Relations Committee, I will be encouraging it to focus on four big areas: • Get our party leadership back on track concerning Europe. • Mobilise newly enfranchised overseas voters to vote Lib Dem at the next UK General Election, especially in our target seats. • Keep Lib Dems' profile up internationally so the party continues to have ...

In many ways, Boris Johnson's Festival of Brexit resembles the disaster it was meant to celebrate. It had unrealistic targets, failed to deliver on expectations and left the UK Government severely out-of-pocket. It is little wonder that the National Audit Office has been called in to finally lay it to rest. If only they could do the same for Brexit. The Independent reports that the £120m "Festival of Brexit", which culminated in a year-long series of events celebrating British creativity, is facing fierce criticism for its "colossal waste" of taxpayer money after bringing in live audiences of less than 4.5 ...

The second Connecting Carers Café for the West End and Lochee is this Thursday morning at the Friary in Tullideph Road. Feedback from the October café that Fraser attended was that the starting time was a bit early for some carers to attend. Therefore the start time has been amended from 9.30am to 10.15am and now offering the carers soup and a roll. All carers welcome!
