Last week the Liberal Democrats lost a seat on Kingston Council in a by-election. I've not seen much discussion of this in Lib Dem circles, but then with the closure of the party newspaper, the instinctive loyalty of Lib Dem Voice and the decline of blogging generally, it's hard to find much Lib Dem discussion at all. But an article from the On London site tells us much of what went on in the contest in Green Lane and St James ward, though it omits the fact that this corner of the borough was safe territory for us until a ...
Ealing Today reports: The Liberal Democrats have selected their candidate to contest the Southall constituency in the next general election. Tariq Mahmood becomes their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the seat which is currently held for Labour by Virendra Sharma with a large majority. Mr Mahmood said, "I have stood for election in parliamentary seats three times; the last being in Ealing Southall in 2019 where I more than doubled the vote share so I am very familiar with the local issues. I am a consultant gastroenterologist and have worked in the NHS for more than 25 years. I have spent ...
Embed from Getty ImagesI don't know if this surprises you, but it surprised me. We think of Florence Nightingale as a mid-19th century figure because of her rise to fame in the Crimean War. Yet she lived to the age of 90 and did not die until 1910.

Amazing story of 18-inch dueling dwarf who owned pair of trousers sold for almost £10k
Despite their fearsome reputation, the judges of our Headline of the Day Award can be a sentimental bunch. The local connection was enough to win this tale of Jeffery Hudson's trousers today's award, despite its questionable grammar. "Did the story tell for £10k?" they asked, and "Can one be said to have owned a pair of trousers 'sold for almost £10k' if that sale did not take place until centuries after one's death?" Oh, and "Why have they used 'dueling', which is generally seen as an American spelling?" Still, well done to the Leicester Mercury. There's more about Jeffery Hudson ...
Liberal Democrats, we have a problem. As Max Wilkinson has commented in a recent posting, soft Conservatives are turning to us partly because the government has broken its promises not to raise taxes. But we are committed to decent public services, staffed by people who are decently paid; and after 20 years of cuts in services and real reductions in public service pay, quality can only be regained by substantial and sustained increases in spending. Furthermore, public service workers - people who believe that life is not only about money but also about what you put back into society and ...
West Worcestershire's Liberal Democrat members have chosen Councillor Dan Boatright as their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate.
Wera Hobhouse MP writes: The Conservatives are taking a major risk with people's lives
The UK's presidency of COP26 should have been a turning point for Government action. Instead there are targets, with no sufficient plans in place to actually meet them. Therese Coffey noted that "the big COPs tend to be every five years," which aligns well with her colleague Sunak's lacklustre attitude toward this year's conference. The day after leaving COP27, where he said we need to 'move further and faster' toward Net Zero, the Prime Minister is set to announce that he has secured a major deal with the US to import 10 billion cubic metres of fracked shale gas. Meanwhile, ...
The Guardian reports on findings by the National Audit Office that the Home Office has an incomplete and out-of-date grasp of the cost of fraud in the UK and a poor understanding of who commits the crime. The paper says that the government's current estimate of the cost of fraud to individuals is based on data and prices from six years ago and that that the Home Office has no reliable estimate of the cost of fraud to businesses, or how much firms spend on tackling the crime: Fraud made up 41% of crime in the year to June 2022 ...
Residents will recall that, following the recent road collision on Hawkhill opposite the Peddie Street junction, the safety barrier was badly damaged. We asked the Roads Maintenance Partnership for a temporary barrier pending the permanent replacement. This was provided very promptly but part of the section recently came detached as the photo shows. We raised this with the council's Head of Sustainable Transport and Roads who responded positively as follows : "I'm advised that the permanent repair will be completed this month. The roads maintenance partnership didn't have the required panels in store so this order was grouped with others ...
